We have backups when we use our Whalers. Extra VHFs, GPSs, kicker motors, etc. I just want to remind everyone to backup your computers. My computer has been running 24/7 for about 4 years and the hard drive failed yesterday. Lucky for me I had everything backed up. But it's still a ton of brain damage to buy a new computer and re-install everything. I have 2 external USB hard drives that are my onsite backups. I am also backing up on a "cloud" service through Comcast/Mozy. 200Gigs for $99/year, they also have cheaper (50 gig) and free (2 gig) plans. What do you guys use for your computer backups? Warren |

I use symantec ghost for.backups. I get a monthly base with daily incrementals. I backup to a pair of external usb hard disks, one I keep at home and one I keep elsewhere. They get rotated weekly, so I have an on-site backup that is never older than 24 hours and an off-site that is never older than 1 week. I have had hard disk failures and with a program like ghost you just restore your latest backup to your new hard disk and presto you are right back to exactly where you.were when the backup was made. I am a software engineer and work with computers every day. Under my desk at work I have a box with approximately 10-15 hard disks that failed at some point over the past 7 years or so. Hard disks do fail, expect it to happen to you one day. Keep good backups it is worth the effort! |

PS- Those dead hard disks are from multiple computers. I work with several computers on a daily basis. |

All hard drives will fail so back up is essential. I use external drives, a server, USB flash, DVDs, CDs, very little cloud and some remote storage as well. Apple has a built in back up system called Time Machine that updates the back up drive of any changes every hour so I use that for much of my back ups. I don't like the cloud because it is verrrry sloooow when backing up larger amounts of data. Our home situation is a bit abnormal since we back up over 4 terabytes of data. |

Apple time machine, here, but also have four other HD's that hold some the priceless data as well. I will also consider icloud, when it comes out this fall as additional, cheap storage. |

I backup to an external hard drive and periodically take it to the office and copy files to my work PC as extra protection. Do very little work at home but I'd hate to lose the thousands of photos I've collected. Ll |

Yep. I tell the people I provide tech support to the following four things: 1) Always keep the system/restore disks that came with your computer Time machine is a great program, but it's problematic if you want to do a clean install. Restorations from Time Machine are essentially clones: you get what you had before, good or bad. With a clean install, it's like your computer was when it was new. Microsoft has a great free tool called "sync toy", that will keep any two folders synced. It is great if you like to delete unwanted stuff only once and have it also delete from your backup. I do clean installs of my windows boxes about 1x/yr -Peter |
