[Should] I buy a regular Igloo cooler, and then buy a cushion for it? Or, do they come already with a non-removable cushion molded into the top? I am interested in recommendations as to where to buy them, too. :)

Tom's link for Hall's Nautical will take you to Lois, and her son Harry, who seems to be taking on more involvement in the business.

They make great OEM material Whaler cushions. If you want an Igloo brand cushion:

The cushions are under accessories and parts.

The Igloo cushions are thin cheap crap and not worthy of being in a Whaler. Why bother?

Tom....Not only that but they cost 1/2 as much as Halls.

Peter...seriously....have you EVER seen a cushion built into a cooler? Go to Sam's, Wally world, K-fart, etc and tell me of one cooler with a built in cushion. You love wasting bandwidth these days.

Nick, you've heard me blabbing in other threads about not being a "rampant consumerist". Despite owning close to 10 coolers in all shapes and sizes, (none right for sitting on), I've never bought one at a store. Ever. Those aren't just empty words. I've never even seen or noticed coolers in those places, because until now, I've never even considered buying one new. I have no earthly idea what's out there available to buy. No joke. The only thing I know a bout Igloo coolers is little tidbits I've picked up right here on CWW. That's it. And there hasn't been much of that.

I'm exploring removeable seating options for my classic 17, which has no seats at all, since the previous owner specced it as a pure fishing machine.

Peter - many stores sell Igloo and Coleman marine series coolers - stores such as Walmart, West Marine, Sam's Club, Costco, Dick's Sporting Goods, Cabelas, and Bass Pro Shop.

Many of the marine coolers have pre-made seating cushions available as an accessory. They usually come with four snaps which you must screw into the cooler lid yourself. As noted by Tom, these cushions are often thin and somewhat cheap. However, they are also fairly inexpensive. Sometimes the cooler and cushion are sold together as a set.

Another option is to buy a marine cooler and then have your own cushion made. A custom made cushion will almost certainly be more expensive, but will likely be of better quality. You can also have the cushion customized so that, for instance, it is much thicker than a pre-made cushion.

You need to start by figuring out what size cooler you want. You then need to figure out how you will secure it to the deck in your boat (there are deck anchoring kits commercially available, or you can make your own custom set-up). After that, you can decide what to do about a cushion.

Hall's for sure. They do great work and are nice people. We met them in April at Homassossas rendezvous. We actually drove last time and I took my quarter cushion (which I wrecked) for them to fix or use for pattern. They advised me they could make two more with thicker foam and make a bow cushion for my Outrage 17 while we were in FL (about a week). The price was right, great workmanship and design insight to how Whaler guys use their boats. In fact they showed up at the party in their Montauk.

Go with Hall's for sure. Keep it in the family.

Had to replace my 72 qt. Igloo cooler on my Dauntless. Bought [a new one at] Bass Pro Shop. The snaps fit my Whaler cushion but the original cooler had much more so I unscrewed them and added them to the new cooler. Typical Whaler, adding more than is needed. I like that.

Peter--Having bought both my 94-quart Igloo and matching cushion from West Marine, I can tell you that you'll be much happier with the Hall's cushion. The Igloo cushion looks and feels cheap, only comes in bright white, and the snap straps are loose-fitting when attached to the cooler snaps (pre-attached by mfr).

While the Hall's is much pricier, the cushion is invariably more appealing aesthetically, more comfortable, and will likely last much longer.

If you want to order a cushion from Hall's, order it through Sue at Twin Cities Marine. It will be the exact same price except you will help support Sue who is about the nicest person you can buy from. Just tell her you want the Hall's cushion.

Thanks guys. This has been VERY informative. Was there a standard sized cooler that came with the classic Montauk? My 1998 Alert 17 has the Montauk center console from the same era.

Nick--I'm in a Goodwill store shopping as we speak. I have my eye open for coolers. I don't think they're allowed to sell used ones though. But I just bought a brand new, hard to find coffee maker, to use for one of its rare parts. Sweet! Try that at Wal Mart.

The ONLY reason I go to Wally world is to buy Herr's Potato chips--can't find them in FL anywhere else.

I was just ribbin ya Peter! I have a Hall's 72-quart--great size on 17-- cushion and although nice, next time I want more or denser foam. Hers looks like OEM but if you are gonna be sitting on it, especially on a 17, ya might want more foam or put a throwable cushion on top to save your arse. I also had Lois make me a seatback cushion for my RPS. Held on with 6 snaps and not only did it feel good but you did not "lay" back as far when you were driving. I think it was the 6" cushion for a Newport, that way you still saw my nicely varnished wood.

It's hard to beat a Yeti Tundra cooler and they make their own cushions and non slip tops.--Bill

I suggested Igloo for the budget minded. Interestingly, I bought a replacement Igloo, and while not cheap, cost wise, it was cheaply made. The tabs for the snaps wear out in a couple of years.

So, I ordered one from Lois and I was surprised that they only use 2" foam, where the Igloo is 3" foam. The foam density is better on the Hall's but I wish I had known and I would have custom ordered a 3" cooler cushion.

I also got the banana bow cushions and since we don't ride up there, the 2" is fine.

I finally got fed up with Igloo coolers falling apart and bought a Yeti cooler for my 22 Outrage--in fact, I bought two. I put a 155 in front of the console (same size as Igloo 162) and an 85 under my leaning post. I am probably going to move the 155 behind the leaning post (as a fish box) and put a 110 in front of the console for drinks and ice. All Yeti's are available with high quality cushions and serve double duty as casting platforms. If you boat out West or up North where keeping ice is not a big deal, this would probably be overkill. In Texas (and I would guess Florida, as well), the extra insulation, sun protection and strength are much more Whaler-like than that provided by the Igloo disposable coolers.

West Marine has a Marine Elite Cooler, 94-quart. Keeps ice seven days, 16.75 W x 34.5 L x 17.63 H in their catalog for $107. This cooler features SS hinges and latch.

Specialty Marine has Whaler cooler cushions that match your Whaler cushions for $69

Go for a Yeti Brand Cooler. They are unbelievably expensive but seems to be well made. When my 72 quart Igloo crapped out I bought a 105 quart Yeti. It has darn near the same footprint as the 72 quart Igloo and the cushion actually works.

I have used the Engel 65 as a direct replacement for the Igloo 72. It is the same quality as the Yeti coolers (I own both) and the price is a little less expensive...It is the closest in size to the stock Whaler 72 Igloo.. I have it on my 170 Montauk, and fit the cooler chocks with only a slight modification.

I use Specialty Marine Cushions the 72qt will fit the top on the Engel 65. They are very nice quality at a good price.

Igloo Marine Cooler 72qt:
Exterior Dimensions: 29.5" x 16.5" x 16.13"

Engel65 DeepBlue 65qt:
External Dimensions: 29.9" x 16.8" x 16.5"

The Engel 65's dimensions are the closest of any ultra high quality cooler repacement that I have found for the front cooler/seat in a Montauk.

Unless Specialty has changed their foam or is willing to upgrade, go with Halls. I have their entire interior cushion set for my 13 and it sits in my shed because the foam is so thin it basically just looks good....ass still hurts.

Sorry Specialty for the diss but I e-mailed you 3 years ago about it and no response. Nice work but my ironing board has more cushion on it.
