Hi all. The Sakonnet featured in the Reference Section 16-17 Models features an option I haven't seen before--a wooden "box" mounted on the starboard aft rail. I am currently rebuilding the console on my [1969] Sakonnet and this option gained my attention. I'm asking if anyone is familiar with this option pictured in the Reference section. Is it a cutting board and reel cover? Was this an original option, or aftermarket? Any plans? Apologies if this is covered somewhere else--I haven't come across it. Thanks, Chuckles http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/16-17/models.html#sakonnet |

I think it is the reel end of a lockable rod holder. John |

That's exactly what it is. There is a corresponding plywood rod tip holder which mounts under the side rail a few feet forward of the locking rod box. The box is actually a two-piece affair, the visible portion which is seen in the brochure is a cover that fits over another section; the whole system locks in place to secure up to 3 rod ends with reels. It was offered as an option on many of the 16'7" models during the 60s and 70s. I've built several of them, I may have the plans for them. If I'm able to locate, I'll send to jimh. I also believe Nauticallumber was thinking about doing a run of them last year. |

I believe Nautical or Specialty makes them. They are neat but another thing to varnish in my opinion. Then again with the price of equipment it is nice to be able to lock up your rods while you run in to eat or ?? |

They're a neat and well-thought out accessory, although they can get in the way a little. I have one on my '74 Katama, and the mooring cover won't fit over it, so I remove it when I need to cover the boat (easy enough to do). As Tohs said, it's handy for locking rods and can also lock other stuff if you don't have rods. Yes, another thing to varnish, but with the rest of the brightwork on the RPS, side clamps, and locker cover, makes for a beautiful boat. Another example of forward thinking by Boaton Whaler. |

Hey all--Thanks for the quick responses. It's definitely a neat addition to the boat. Whether or not one will make it onto mine will be determined after the barrier coat, bottom paint, RPS and console. Of course, after I post the question, I find a little write-up about it and a photo offering a different perspective: http://classicbanana.com/1972%20outrage%202.gif Go figure. |

I think a replica locking reel box can be obtained from Mike at NAUTICAL LUMBER. See |
