I was motoring along Spa Creek in flat water at no wake speed in Annapolis, Maryland this afternoon. I experienced a shutter in the floor of my Outrage 18 that lasted about 6 or 7 seconds. It was a very rythmic vibration, which was very odd to me, and many thoughts went quickly through my head. I immediately thought my skeg was skimming the bottom, my prop picked up a line, my 1986 Johnson 150 was acting up, or my son was bouncing his leg in a nervous manner. A quick scan of my surroundings left me with a, I don't know what the hec that was feeling? Approximately 5 minutes later I arrived at the Truxton Park boat ramp to pick up my wife and it all came together. She informed me of her vibration experience on land and claimed we just had an earthquake. A few other boaters on the ramp confirmed the same as text messages started coming in. An earthquake of 5.9 on the Richter scale is a very odd event on the east coast. I have never experienced one in my entire life. Experiencing this in my whaler is something I will never forget especially since the odds of experiencing it on the water are pretty low for me at least. Just thought I would share this experience given I never really gave any thought to what an earthquake would be like on the water.
