My wife and I recently completed a week's vacation split up between South Carolina and North Carolina. We started by visiting my brother Tom in Lexington, South Carolina. Tom has a cottage on Lake Murray, and is the proud owner of a Grady-White Tournament 225. Tom and I regularly battle over whether Grady-Whites or Boston Whalers are the superior boat. Here's a couple of pictures of me in my 2002 Dauntless 180 on Lake Murray: http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t329/kalbus/Carolinas%202011/ KevinonBoat.jpg In two days of boating on Lake Murray, I did not see even a single Boston Whaler other than mine. After a few days in South Carolina, it was off to my in-laws' place in Wilmington, North Carolina. My father-in-law arranged a slip for me at the Federal Point Yacht Club, a very nice facility located in the harbor at Carolina Beach: http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t329/kalbus/Carolinas%202011/ FederalPointYachtClub.jpg Upon reaching my slip, I learned that my boat would be spending the next few days next another Grady-White dual console, "Life Is Good": http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t329/kalbus/Carolinas%202011/ Grady-LifeIsGood.jpg . As I would soon learn, the Carolina Beach area is teeming with both Grady-Whites and Boston Whalers. I spent some time fishing with my father-in-law, Jim. http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t329/kalbus/Carolinas%202011/ FishingwithFIL.jpg . Our big catch for the trip was this rather small red drum. http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t329/kalbus/Carolinas%202011/ JimwithFish.jpg While fishing we saw this Outrage 17: http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t329/kalbus/Carolinas%202011/ Outrage17.jpg . And this Revenge 25 Walk-Through (check out the bottom paint on the skegs): http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t329/kalbus/Carolinas%202011/ Revenge25WT.jpg On one day, I took my wife and her parents to Wrightsville Beach for lunch at the Dockside. Here's picture of my wife and her mother while were cruising up the Intracoastal Waterway: http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t329/kalbus/Carolinas%202011/ CruisingtheICW.jpg . On the next day, I took my wife and her parents to Southport for lunch at the Provision Company. Here's my boat at the Provision Company dock: http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t329/kalbus/Carolinas%202011/ AdequateatProvisionCo.jpg . While we were at the Provision Company, another Grady-White docked next to me, this one with a more fitting name for such an inferior boat: http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t329/kalbus/Carolinas%202011/ Grady-ComfortLevelZero.jpg (Before anybody strokes out, that was just a joke.) Back at Federal Point Yacht Club there were a number of large Boston Whalers to be seen. A 240 Outrage with a light blue hull: http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t329/kalbus/Carolinas%202011/ Outrage240.jpg . A nice 305 Conquest: http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t329/kalbus/Carolinas%202011/ Conquest305.jpg . And an Outrage 23: http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t329/kalbus/Carolinas%202011/ Outrage23.jpg There also a number of other Boston Whalers in the general vicinity. Here's a Marine Max special - a 52-foot Sea Ray Sedan Bridge with an 11-foot Boston Whaler tender: http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t329/kalbus/Carolinas%202011/ MarineMaxSpecial.jpg . Here's a Dauntless 15 cruising through the harbor: http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t329/kalbus/Carolinas%202011/ Dauntless15.jpg . And here's an Outrage of unknown length out in Snow's Cut: http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t329/kalbus/Carolinas%202011/ OutrageSnowsCut.jpg . There was even an Ventura 20 sitting on a trailer across from the marina parking lot: http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t329/kalbus/Carolinas%202011/ Ventura20.jpg At the end of the week I got new slip neighbor, a 320 Outrage: http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t329/kalbus/Carolinas%202011/ Outrage320.jpg . I had the smallest boat in the marina, a common theme in my recent travels: http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t329/kalbus/Carolinas%202011/ AdequateatFPYC.jpg Finally, on our last day in Wilmington we went downtown for dinner where we were lucky enough to see the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Tampa. http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t329/kalbus/Carolinas%202011/ DebbieatCutter.jpg . That last one is a gratuitous shot of my wife since most of my Continuous Wave friends have heard of her, but have never seen her - she really does exist.

Thanks for sharing. BTW - I am curious to the pros and cons that you and your brother discuss when talking about your boats? |

Nice narrative and photos Kevin, thanks for the effort. I envy your trips to the coast for family visits as my father recently moved back to WI from the southeastern corner of VA. Unfortunately, that meant the end of my easy and inexpensive trips to the Chesapeake Bay. I also get a kick out of your observation, that the Dauntless is the smallest boat in the marina. I too find that as the norm, most recently at the Alibi Marina in Door Co. Hell, there was even a tender larger than my Outrage berthed there! |

Yes, thanks for sharing. The NC ICW is a great cruising area, huh? Looks like you went to the good spots also. I have pulled into the Provision Company at Southport on many occasions. Kind of pricey but great food, beer and atmosphere. I was in Southport a few weeks ago on business with my young son and we had lunch at the Provision Company and I asked him if he remembered pulling up there in our boat for lunch a few years ago and he had no memory of that. Time flies so I told him to hold on to his hat cause we're coming back by boat. Planning the trip now. Great place! |

Great picks K Albus! prj, I often feel that I have the smallest boat (Dauntless 15) that comes out of the Channel Islands marina too. I don't think I've seen a smaller boat out at Anacapa island (13 miles out). |

Lake Murray is teeming with Whalers, its a big lake 670 miles of shoreline, we are at the Dam End, probably 10 Whalers in My sailing club, including a 15 that club uses as a chase boat. Where on the lake were you? I did not recognize the land or docks, just curious. |

My brother's place is across from Acapulco marina. We went to the dam one day, and then to the other end, where 391 crosses the Big Saluda River, on another day. Admittedly, I did not spend a lot of time hunting for Whalers while I was on the lake. I did notice quite a lot of Sea Hunt, Sea Pro, and Sea Fox boats on the lake. I believe Sea Hunts are made nearby in Columbia, South Carolina, and Sea Foxes are made elsewhere in South Carolina. |
