I shot a bunch of GoPro video this past weekend on our 2011 BWGLCC Fall color tour. I edited this together this evening of the two high speed sections of the Crooked River running from Alanson, Mi to Burt Lake. There were 5 other Whalers running this same river but with the size and wake of our 23 WalkAround we gave plenty of slack between us and the other boats. You can see Kevin Albus' new 235 Pursuit a bit ahead of us in the second run. Here is the video: Here is a thread on the weekend: |

Jeff--Thanks for the video links. Maybe your GPS receiver log trail might have the position and speed data, and you could edit the video to include it as a readout in the lower right corner. Now that would be over-the-top. |

Jim, maybe next time. For next I am hoping to do some multi-camera setups from the deck, under bow, along the side, of and off the stern. Another I suppose could be on the GPS. |

Jeff, Axesome video. It reminds me of a James bond movie chase seen. What is the average depth in the Crooked River.? Drew |

Drew, The majority of the depths are in the 4-6 foot range. |

Jeff, How many GB of memory did that video take, and what resolution did you use? Does anyone have the link to the North of Michigan videos of the Crooked River runs. |

I hope the minority of depths are not in the 2-3 foot range. Nice river run.... |

Thanks Moose on the avg. depth. Also how long is the run ? It appeared to go for a while. Thanks, Drew |

Here's link to a Google map of the Crooked River: http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=45.46007,-84.757805&spn=0.043225,0. 095358&hnear=Michigan&t=h&z=14&vpsrc=6 There are two sections of on-plane running. The first starts just north of Alanson, near the lower left corner of the map, right at the beginning of the long straightaway. That on-plane section runs for about two miles, up to the spot where you can see all of the cottages along the river, near the top center part of the map. The area near the cottages is a no wake zone. Once you get past the cottages there is another on-plane zone which goes for about one mile before getting to the open lake. This section includes a hairpin turn known as Devil's Elbow. It is a lot of work keeping a 23-foot boat on plane through the tight turns of this section. |

Thanks for the map and yes it looked like jeff had his hands full in some of the turns. And there is that concern of vessels coming from the other direction. Drew |

The full raw unedited length of this video segment was 29 minutes. So, from the time we left the docks in Alanson to we came to a stop on Burt Lake just out of the crooked river was 27-28 minutes or so. In full 1080P HD resolution the 29 minutes was about 8-9 gigs. Onced edited in iMovie to 9 minutes and added music and transitions it was 4-5 gigs uncompressed. I then ran it through a Quicktime compression and reduced to 720P HD resolution which got it down to about 1/2 a gig. As for water depths I saw mostly 3-5'. We were the last boat in the procession in both directions so we could get a VHF warning of opposing boat traffic well before we came upon them. Being last though, you could see all of the mud swirling in the river from the previous boats. In this video I shot by hand, we are up bound into Alanson. You can see my father working the wheel to get the boat around some of those turns (I was piloting in the GoPro video). You can also get a much truer view of how wide /skinny the river actually is in some spots. The GoPro wide angle makes it look much wider. Some spots are around 30' wide and you can see, it gets shallow fast on the river edges. |

David (plotman), I could not agree more. I bought both of their albums after hearing them on a Quicksilver Surfing video. It took a little digging as they are a Melbourne Australia based group that does not get out of their homeland too much, if at all. |

Jeff - What was the average boat planing speed in the video, and what kind of top end does the 23 get with the twin 150's? That run looks like the perfect place for a Newport/Montauk! |

Great video Jeff! Just gotta ask, where is everybody? One boat ahead of you and that's it! |

Larry, In the straights we were at WOT which gets us 42-44mph with the twin 150's. The twists and turns were 25-30 mph. It is a great river to run. The last time I did it was in 05 with the same group on our Montauk. Running the Montauk through those sections of the river was akin to running a BMW M3 (E36 to be specific) around a road course. A ton of fun. The 23 is like a BIG boat to be throwing around in there. It was still a blast but far more nerve racking. Towards the end of the video there is a time where I round Devil's Elbow nearly fall off plane. If you watch you can see I was a little "hot" and had to back off the throttles because I began to drift out to port coming a bit close to the grasses. Phil, You can start to see the other boat come into frame one we get back into the lake. Both times we ran the river we brought up the rear and gave a lot of room between us and the next boat. With others ahead of us we could get a VHF call warning of obstacles, floaters or opposing boat traffic far before we would come up on them allowing us to back off and kill our speed and wake. |

Larry, We got about the same performance as Jeff did in the Crooked River. The 21 Walkaround with the Suzuki DF-175 big block 4 got up to 42 and we did the twists and turns in the low 20's. I was real conservative, I didn't want to hit anything this year. |

The secret to running the river as we did is to make the run on a day in October when the morning temperature was about 38-degrees. This tends to hold down the boat traffic in the river, particularly the pontoon boat traffic. If you tried to make these runs on a nice sunny weekend day in August, I would anticipate you'd find many more boats underway in the river. According to the log on my GPS, we hit 44.3-MPH in the Hay Lake straightaway. |

Dave, 300hp is actually the minimum horsepower rating for the hull. 400 is max. Most of the 23 WalkAround Whaler Drives have twin 200's like John Raby's. Personally I think 225 or 250's would be just right but, I like going fast. Don't forget while it is called a "23" I think the LOA from the bow (not pulpit) to the back of the motors is 28' and it is a heavy boat. Also our 1993 Yamaha 150's have 1930 hours on them. |

For 93' motors they sure sing well. Great clip, keep them coming. |

Thanks for sharing. Great river run. I love the sound of the horsepower. I was thinking, not much room for other boaters in that waterway.. |
