For his efforts at rescuing twelve swimmers from Lake Michigan near Frankfort, Michigan who were struggling to swim in strong rip currents, a USCG Seaman was recently honored with a Silver Lifesaving Medal. See http://coastguard.dodlive.mil/2011/10/ shipmate-of-the-week-%e2%80%93-ast3-thomas-mcarthur/ He has since become a rescue swimmer and is stationed at USCG AIR STATION Traverse City (Michigan). |

I had the unfortunate experience of needing to have a USCG helicopter from Traverse City do a basket lift of an severely injured diver in the middle of Lake Michigan this summer, and the rescue swimmer who jumped into the lake to assist the basket lift was one of the most impressive people I have ever met. These guys are good.... they make up the "real" USCG, as opposed to the 23 year olds kids with fast boats and machine guns that think that we are all terrorists. Kudus to this young man for his past work, and for what ought to be a first class career as a rescue swimmer. Dave Sutton |

This link will take you to a great photo. http://www.flickr.com/photos/greatlakeskids/5985199655/in/photostream The Coast Guard rescue swimmers are multi talented.. I didn't personally see him in action at the TC Film Festival Kids activities, but those who did, said he did an awesome dry land demo with the kids. Recently, the Weather Channel had a segment about the Coast Guard rescue swimmer training. The graduation rate is less than 10% and once, none made thru the course. BTW---Coast Guard Station Traverse City is first rate. |

There was a movie about the rescue swimmers a few years ago. It's titled "The Guardian." It opened my eyes to what they do and how they train. Well worth watching. |
