I not a big fan however, during these challenging times West Marine will be opening the Countries Largest West Marine Store to open on Nov. 10th or the 11th. Here in Ft. Lauderdale (State Rd. 84 and Andrews Ave) supposed to be 40,000-50,000 sq ft.(so I was told) of marine/boating and gear. I wonder how much of the floor area will be dedicated to clothing? Still should be a nice store and giving a few more people some jobs or work.

With that kind of square footage, they could probably carry every item found in the catalog. |

It might be the same floorplan as the one they opened three years ago in Jacksonville, FL. That was touted as their largest store to date. It has very nice "Hatteras boat" mock up where the electronics section is located. Amazing in this economy they are building more and bigger stores. |

Yes, they serve an expensive service. I miss the "Boaters World" we had in S/W FL, lost to our poor economy. I think the added jobs are good. I guess they are trying to be competitive with the large Bass Pro shop in Ft. Lauderdale. |

West's price match policy makes them very competitive in our area including the dot com stores. They have the best selection of stainless steel common hardware in this area AFAIK. I have not checked the Fastenal store for stainless so I may be mistaken. My only gripe is the lack of knowledge of some of the sales staff. Overall they are an asset. Butch |

Russ: One thing I can tell you all the merchandise in West Marine is related to the boating industry only, Where as Bass Pro(biggest Bass Pro I have ever been in was out in Colorado 2 floors and twice as big as the Ft Lauderdale location) covers everything, Hunting (both with guns and bows) a gun and bow range, a restaurant with a sushi bar, mostly clothing, shoes, skiing, and they sell boats and ATVs as well.Jefecino: I do have to agree with you on the stainless selection at West Marine, not only do they have a very wide selection but the quality of the stainless is superior. I'm very fortunate to live near boaters row in Ft Lauderdale (State Road 84), Not only do I have a West Marine, there is also a BOW, Sailorman (all used equipment for all types of boats) Fastenal Store, and two of the best Hardware stores I have ever been in. The Fastenal store usually does not stock that much but ordering usually comes in a 2-3 days if it is not a specialty item. I also have other types of marine stores (Fabericators, Alumimun welders, canvas places, boat riggers, plastics, other marine stores, lumber mills and a trailer store) all with in 2 miles of each other... Take care |

I am a West Marine shopper but I also use a few of the mom and pop sailing and marine supply stores. The West Marine I visit most often is probably about 30,000 square feet, including the behind the scenes space. There are many things in the online store that are not carried in this particular location.Lest you be fooled about the quality of the SS in West Marine, bring a magnet with you. There are some very high end stainless products in West Marine, as well as some CRAP SS. You have to pick and choose. |

Ahhhh Boaters World. They were a good store around here. West Marine has a few places, closed up a few too. For stainless hardware I can go locally to Ace Hardware (very nice selection) or if looking for bulk, Home Depot carries philips wood screws in larger quantities. (also have some smaller stuff) Lowes has some stainless but nothing specialized. |
