I just purchased a [13-foot Boston Whaler boat] that appears to be fairly old. The boat has the origninal white steering wheel, steering cables, brass pins and original wood. She is in rough shape. I wanted to check on the age of the boat with hull ID but there is a form-fitting fiberglass tray that sets in the back of the transom well. This covers the area where the hull number typically resides. This really looks like it was manufactured to fit the boat including having a brass hull thru tube. this looks so matching that I did not want to tear it out just to see the hull id number. I took pictures with my phone but do not know how to post this kind of picture. Any thoughts? I can email pics but cannot post.

Thank you and glad to be back posting on this site.

My 1962 13' Sport has the HIN stenciled on the bottom of the forward locker. Try taking a look there.

No trays are OEM that I know of. Send me the pics.

This tray or splashwell looks more like a reinforcement to me. What do ya'll think?

Not if if was supporting the transom.

Joel says it is kinda flimsy so I might be wrong. He hopes it comes out in one piece. I think I would remove it if the rest of the transom looks solid(corners).

I would find a better way to reinforce the transom if that what was needed.

Sorry I have been off CW the past week. I appreciate Nick taking the time to take a look, give his opinion and post my phone picture. Thank you.

The tray wall thickness is too thin, in my opinion, to act as a support or structural item of any kind. It is also not fastened as if to support the transom or any other part. The boat is being delivered to my garage at the end of this week. I can't wait to take a closer look with better lighting and warmer ambient air. I will take some better pictures and post some more information on the fastening technique (which I am still trying to figure out). This just seems to be an oddity to me at this time.

I was able to remove the tray from the boat and will post pictures. I do think it may have been added to the boat later as several of you have inidicated.

What is interesting is that I am still trying to figure out the year of the boat. It does not have the approximate 8 inch diameter circle (flush fit) forward of the front storage locker. (What years did they have this?) It does not have the raised approximate two inch diameter circle that was located in front storage locker and sometimes also contained the stenciled number (What years did they have this). It does not have a stencil in the rear splash well. But it does have the brass drain tube exiting under the boat (approximately 18 inches from the rear of the boat) which opens up into a small sump well forward of the rear splash well wall (main interior of the boat). I have not been able to identify a FP number inside that small sump (could be covered up). I have seen some of the pictures on CW indicating that the early whalers had this small sump. Does anyone know when the lower drain tube was moved back to the transom? This may help in narrowing down the age and deciding where I should focus on a stencil id.

Thank you.
