Next year is probably the time for a Classic Whaler Appearance. After long being referred to as Milk Bottle boats, several years ago the Jersey Skiffs showed up with both wood and glass boats. This year the GLASPAR Owners of Florida had a fairly large display with no visable wood. Would make a neat spot for the Rendevous and the cruise thru the Dora Canal is really nice. Bill

Wooden boat shows and publications are calling it "classic glass". Seems like a logical step in broadening appeal at shows. I have been attending antique boat shows since I was a kid, and the addition of vintage cars and rare fiberglass vessels is cool.
I wish I could attend the Mt. Dora show.

It would be a good excuse to leave MI before the water warms up, visit Disney World, and explore Florida and the clain of lakes around Mt Dora in your classic whaler.
Noticed several Chris Craft Classics from Michigan. on the docks today. Bill

I have attended many years in a row with a "vintage" fiberglass Jersey Speed Skiff. The place is beautiful. The lakes are awesome. Weather and sunsets usually perfect. And a good spot to take the ladies for shopping and antiquing, while the men are gaulking.

Unfortunately last weekend the skiff boys of CRA, Classic Raceboats Association(?), suffered a terrible loss (X3)on adjoining Lake Tavares. I am not sure what the response will be from the Florida owners, and haven't heard of anyone coming down from New Jersey.

I highly recommend the experience, especially anyone with an appreciation for wooden boats. My plastic 75 mph boat got a good run out of a most beautiful classic SLEEPER on the lake a few years ago! Great people all around. Think I can say anyone that ventures will thoroughly enjoy themselves. zotcha.

No problem displaying your classic Whaler at the show. the AOMCI(Antique Outboard Motor club) is part of the show. All it takes is to become a member of the AOMCI. Trying to form an organization and become accepted might be next to impossible. Getting your Whaler or a group of Whalers in the water also won't work out. That's reserved for the Actual Antique Wooden Boat Club members. Actually the show itself has overgrown the facility. I was planning on bringing my 13 footer to the show and hopefully selling it. They have a large lot reserved for antique boats for sale. They call it the Field of Dreams.(cute name) They will park your boat in there with your for sale sign for $100. Only thing is the boat can't be moved till the end of the show on Sunday afternoon. So it sits from Thursday thru Sunday, can't demo the boat or even run the engine. (no water supply). I knew of a fellow that had a buyer for his $45,000 antique wooden speedboat. The deal fell through becuase the buyer had to leave town on Saturday, and they wouldn't pull the boat out of the lot. Unfortinately the boat was buried in the back of the lot. I heard last year they only sold one boat.
But if you like to gawk at unbelievable mostly wooden boats its the place to be.
The classic Race Boat Association event was held 2 weeks ago and is not part of the Classic Wooden boat Show. The race boats are mostly antique wooden inboard hydros and runabouts, and they run flybys and "demonstration" racing.
The also have a scattering of small outboard raceboats from the AOMCI, and also a gathering of jersey speed skiffs, from zotcha's organization. I ran my Desilva Class F Racing Runabout at the event 4 years ago, and had a blast. I felt it was safer than when I ran that boat at the AOMCI meets, becuase they have an actual course marked out, a crash boat, Sheriff Dept scuba divers, an ambulance, and it is highly regulated. This year they had three fatalities, one on Saturday with the skiffs and two on Sunday when two inboard hydros collided. They were the first fatalities at MT. Dora since the organization started 7 years ago.

Bink is correct. It was a sad weekend for very many. I am fortunate to have not attended. I have had the honor of knowing the skiff driver for 9 years and he will be sorely missed. The two hydro divers of Sunday's incident I had never had the opportunity to meet. It was a sad weekend. God bless those that were lost and those who are survived. senti-Mental value. Granted the three fatalaties were indeed a tragedy and suspect it may affect organized races there in the near future.
On the Sunnyland subject, checked with the Glaspar site and one of the selling points their contingent used was was the use of Glaspars? in the movie "On Golden Pond" in 1981 in addition to the Chris. Have the classic whalers ever been featured in any big productions other than most recent wars and Disney World?
Also, Bink is right on the dock space but I was thinking of the beach front where the skiffs used to park for the visiting classics not in a land display area. Bill

CRA, Classic Raceboat Assoc. is not a racing program. It is not a member of the APBA. There are no trophies or cash awarded, although they give raceboat owners who participate both days "tow money" depending on how far you have traveled to get there. It is billed as "demonstration" racing (whatever that is) and "flybys". When I ran my race boat there in "08, at the drivers meeting we were told a few times that they would not tolerate racing one another, and we need to leave enough space from boat to boat to insure safety, If you were thought to be racing you would be black flagged and your boat would be removed form the water. But in real life, nobody wants to see someone pass them. Also boats are divided into classes and each class is put out separately, so you don't have 65mph boats (like mine) running along side 150mph boats. Driving raceboats is inherently dangerous, people who do it accept that fact. The adrenaline rush is high, you just don't get that from bowling.

Here are about 45 pictures from the '08 event

Thanks for the info Binkster, Your FLASHBACK looks terrific and some great shots. Reminds me of regatta's at Clayton. and thoughts of the old Sid Craft but traded for SK,s before moving south in 67 then jets that completely lost favor during J. Carter's watch. Enjoy those classics.
