Look for the TV series "Flipper" there are many episodes with vintage Whalers mainly the 13 ft and 16 ft boats. Corney plots but fun back then and today too. The ranger father police boat however was not a Whaler but a tri hull probably because Whaler did not make "big" boats back then. One video I saw had a old classic 16 ft Whaler with the wood console.

Great show with Ranger Porter Ricks and his Thunderbird patrol boat (or was it an early tri-hull Formula?). Sandy & Bud had the 13' Boston Whaler Standard with tiller steering with something like a Merc 15 or 18?. In 1966, after watching the show my brother (13), sister (11), and I (12) saved up $350, and with Dad adding another $350, bought a 13' Boston Whaler Sport with a mighty Johnson 18! |

Our 1st Whaler was a blue interior 13 with a 9.8 HP Merc. Moved right along with 1 or 2 people.Worked great - couldn't afford a 40 for a few more years. |

Bucka and I saw the boat from the TV show Gentle Ben. According to the nice old gentleman driving it was the school bus on the show. I believe he said it was used on Flipper as well. Maybe Dave remembers for sure. Here is a picture of her I took up on Isle Royal in 2010. http:/ / s18. photobucket. com/ albums/ b115/ johndraby/ 2010%20Isle%20R oyale%20NP/ ?action=view& current=IMG_5088. jpg#!oZZ62QQcurrentZZhttp%3A %2F%2Fs18. photobucket. com%2Falbums%2Fb115%2Fjohndraby%2F2010%2520Isle% 2520Royale%2520NP%2F%3Faction%3Dview%26current%3DIMG_5088. jpg |

I remember one particular episode when a very young Martin Sheen was up to no good in a Nauset, he had a straight six Merc 100 on it and he was found adrift in it. I can never seem to remember the different plots of that show, but the 13 with the stick-steered 35 Merc and the old T-Bird with the twin ancient MerCruisers are still a hoot to watch. |

Martin Sheen played a kind of homeless kid who was accused of eating endangered shell fish. It turned out to be a case of mistaken identity- a sea lion ate the bivalves. I did not know there were sea lions in southern Florida! If I remember correctly there were two whalers on the show in the first season: the 13 and a bigger one of some kind, maybe a Nauset. The promotional deal must have fallen through, in later seasons the whaler logo was painted over on the 13. |
