I have a 1968 SPORT 13 that I keep in the water. Is it practical to cover this boat? How will a cover fasten to the boat? My wife is a seamstress and will make it for me. Thanks. --Paul

Keeping the boat in the water creates more of a problem to secure the canvas (I tie my canvas to the trailer). You either are going have to install some eyelets or snaps to the hull and have the same on the canvas to be able to tie them together. Depending on how fancy you want to get will determine the amount of snaps you will need to use. I can not think of another way to protect your boat unless you can put it under a boat house. Is it a problem to keep the whaler on the trailer? This would be the best...Take care

Mills Canvas out of Greenport, New York, was the OEM supplier to Boston Whaler. They still make high quality mooring covers for your SPORT 13. They have a unique clip that holds the canvas onto the gunwale, and a nylon line that goes all the way around the gunwale that tightens and ties at the aft end.
My Super Sport 13 stays on a mooring all season, and the Mills cover stays put from weekend to weekend, keeping rain out, and great protection from the sun. Each season I apply 303 water repellent to shed water, and help with cleaning the canvas. The [covers made by Mills] are not cheap, but neither are Boston Whalers.

[Several years later] Do you need to install any hardware on the SPORT 13 to attach the cover?

The fastener device used by Wm. J. Mills & Sons is a metal fitting that is held in place under the lip of the gunwale by two screws. I don't know if its use is unique to Mills. I have a cover for my Boston Whaler. It was not made by Mills. It uses the same hooks. I don't know of a source for the hooks, but I haven't really looked for them. The fastener device is very simple. It is just a small brass fitting that is rolled into a little open curled hook. There is room to pass a rope into the eye of the hook. When the rope is tensioned, it stays retained in the hook. Maybe you can buy them from Mills.
The curled hook metal fittings are very inconspicuous. They are typically spaced about two or three feet apart under the lip of the gunwale. On the cover I have, there is elastic shock cord fitted to the cover. The cord has to be stretched to reach the gunwale clips.

For the Mills Canvas for the 13, I have used no additional hardware.
The only thing I have added, was a "Gull Sweep" mount through the canvas (tiny hole) so I could mount the "Gull Sweep" to prevent seagulls from perching and pooping!! (See website for canvas mount)
The latest version of the "Gull Sweep" has a clip that prevents the sweep from coming off the mount in any wind condition. Works pretty darn good too. (See website for retainer clip)
On the mooring or on the dock during the week, I'm discouraging the gulls from landing, and make it easier for them to choose SOMEONE ELSE'S BOAT. (Hey, what can I tell ya....it's every man for themselves out there in the harsh seagull environment!!!)
