Hi--new to the forum and a new Boston Whaler boat owner--finally. Is there anywhere plans to make a sunbrella cover for the console and seat on my 1998 Montauk 17?

Any reputable boat cover maker should be able to do it for you. Local shop did mine for Outrage 17 and it is excellent - my cover goes from cooler over console and over RPS. I have a zipper over the port side door that curves over the top and a zipper down the midline of the aft end that secures the cover over the RPS. I can send photos if you send email

Or if you want the best call Mills.

I don't know of any sources of any patterns for any canvas components for Boston Whaler boats.

Any good canvas shop, boat cover, seat cushion place can do it for you. I would design it with an air vent for air and heat circulation.

[H]i again. [P]erhaps [I] started this by asking for the wrong thing. [W]hat [I]'m looking to make is a cover to fit over the center console of my 17 when it is at the mooring to keep rain off--squarish bag made of sunbrella with [I] assume a drawstring at the base. [W]ould there be anyone who has something like this sketched[?] Or, do [I] need to take the tape measure and get to work?--glenn

Glenn -

Welcome to the forum!

I think there may have been a bit of confusion on if you were making one yourself versus looking for a firm that could fabricate one.

Based on your last post, it looks like you have the ability and material to make one. While I'm dangerous around a sewing machine, below are couple of thoughts:

--Double up on the fabric at the areas that may be prone to wear, if using it on a trailer; along the top ridge and corners to protect while buffeting during trailering, especially the console.

--Drawstring around the base of the console cover was a problem for me. Couldn't tighten it enough to keep it on the console. Wanted to pop off during trailering. Alternatives could be "lift the dot" snaps, regular snaps, turnbuckle type snaps. I think the lift the dot and turnbuckle would be problematic, too prone to bang a toe on them, since those two devices would protrude more from the perimeter of the console when the cover would be off. Another alternative is shockcord and hook combination that Mills Canvas uses for recent mooring covers:

- Regarding fabricating two covers; one for the console and one for the seat vs one that covers both. Gotta think about that one. While it would be a rare occasion to only remove one cover and not both, would it be easier to store two small covers versus one large one.

Regards - Don

To clarify, the reference to "Mills" is to the Wm. J. Mills & Sons canvas company in Greenport, Long Island, New York. For many years they were the maker of the factory canvas for classic Boston Whaler boats like your MONTAUK 17. They have patterns for all sorts of canvas for Boston Whaler boats, but, as far as I know, they do not sell the patterns. They just sell finished canvas.

As for the claim that Mills is the best, I would say they have great designs and their workmanship is very good. Their canvas is made to a pattern and you have to fit it to your boat. You can have similar canvas products made locally and custom fit to your boat. There are many canvas artisans that can make superb canvas products for boats. Canvas can become priced quite like jewelry, too.

I am not sure how the notion that you wanted to buy pre-made canvas was introduced into the discussion, as your initial article was quite clear--you wanted plans for canvas, not canvas. I think some readers replied thinking you wanted to buy pre-made canvas, and that is how we got onto the sidebar discussion about where to buy pre-made canvas. If you have some skill with a sewing machine, a console cover should not be a project that will be too vexing.

You might want to consider making a "mockup" first with patterning material available from Sailrite (sailrite.com) for about $3.00 per yard. If you are not familiar with Sailrite, I have used them for over 10 years and have been completely satisfied.
