Tamira and I enjoyed a quick visit to California’s Central Coast at the end of July. Leaving Juneau, Alaska with rain and 52-degrees weather we flew into Santa Barbara (clam chowder and coconut shrimp on the pier) and clear 85-degree weather and then drove north to Oceano (Pismo Beach) to visit my 87-yr old uncle who lives alone. We next had a wedding to attend in Bodega Bay and since Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa were “on the way” what better opportunity to visit Andy Gere and Tony Wilde (elaelap).

We met Andy for a quick visit at his home and then a cruise aboard “Namequoit” (1989 22’ Boston Whaler cuddy). As I mentioned the quick visit (including cruise) was all of 4 hours. We left the house and took a fast tour along the Santa Cruz waterfront to the Santa Cruz boat harbor (though Andy drove slowly amid all the walkers, runners, bikers, tourists, etc.). We secured “Namequoit” for sea by installing her electronics and stowing gear. The 200 Etec fired right up (of course) and we headed out of the harbor passing many other Whalers and assorted yachts and “not-so yachts”. This is the same harbor that was devastated with the Japanese tsunami last year; but now it looked in good shape. Andy was constantly on the throttle (as he needed to be) in the 2-4 foot swell and 1-2 foot wind driven waves; to have blasted along at the 29-knots I usually travel at in the sheltered SE Alaska waters would have had us airborne. We headed northwest into the wind and seas and looked at the natural bridge and Santa Cruz from offshore. “Namequoit”’s T-Top with windshield and side curtains proved very useful. Andy has “Namequoit” outfitted with dual binnacle controls for his engines – the 200 Etec and 15-hp Mercury kicker, a very clean set-up. He also fired up the radar to keep it “exercised”; a very small Furuno unit that provides nice performance and piece-of-mind beyond GPS on foggy days. Then we headed back to a more sheltered area and anchored up for lunch. Homemade sandwiches, chips, stuffed olives, and huge chocolate chip cookies made for a well-balanced meal! On the way back to the harbor porpoises were playing all around. A fun visit, but too short. You can view the pictures below.

So, we left Santa Cruz and headed for a rendezvous in Santa Rosa with Tony & Edie. They had a great spread put on and even had 17 Bodega (Steve Boyd) on hand. Good food, good Whaler conversation, good stories (stories are different than conversation and usually start, “This is no s___.), and a nice evening outside on the patio. After a long day (we left Oceano at 0800 and departed Tony’s at 2230) we headed to the motel for the night. But the next day, after a fine breakfast at Denny’s, we returned to Tony’s for an inspection of “Amulet” (1983 Boston Whaler Montauk with a Suzuki 70 4-stroke) and a nice 6-mile bike ride followed by lunch. Then the girls went for Chinese massages and Tony and I told more stories. Next time you see Tony, ask him about the new knots he learned to tie!

And after all that it was off to Bodega Bay and the wedding which went off as it should – on the beach, not a cloud in the sky, and gentle breezes.

Tony said it in an earlier post, one of the best things about continuousWave is the people you meet. Thank you JimH.

We were welcomed back to Juneau with rain and 52-degree weather; almost like we’d never left.

I've been corresponding with Jim for years through this forum, and off line as well. After a few missed attempts in past years, we finally connected, and I was delighted to have him and his lovely wife Tamira visit me in Santa Cruz, and take a coastal cruise aboard Namequoit. We had a terrific time, and I was glad that the sunny California weather lived up to its reputation.

Here they are, anchored just off of Capitola where we enjoyed a picnic lunch aboard. They really did seem to enjoy the sunshine.

I never get tired of looking at boats and the water. Thanks for posting Jim.

Andy, I can see pride of ownership and functionality in the way your boat is set up. Nice job.

John
