So I got to spend the week with my family and my borthers family on Hood Canal in Washington. We rented a house which had a mooring buoy so that I could bring the whaler for some water fun. To my pleasant suprise my boat immediately felt right at home. The three nearby mooring buoys were populated by whalers.

I also met the owner of the Montauk-17, John, and he also happens to be the owner of Olympic Ooutdoor Center http://www.olympicoutdoorcenter.com/olympicoutdoorcenter.php where we rented some kayaks. The store is completely dialed in and he has several other locations with equipment to rent. If you are ever in the area, its the place to go.

We also had some good results with the fishing and crabbing!!! Ah summer in the Pacific Northwest.

Chris--very lovely, everything--the narrative, the pictures, the boats, the hyperlinks--all good stuff. Thanks for the contribution to our boating content.

Chris,

My wife's family had a home on Hood Canal for many years, east of Union on the south shore. We have spent many happy days on the Canal wiith our Whalers over the years.

In recent years, we have rented a house on the north shore, across from Union, with my wife's sister's family (who happen to own an Outrage 25). We enjoyed those times immensely.

Hood Canal is one of our favorite places on earth.

I agree, Hood Canal IS a beautiful place.

My introduction to Boston Whaler boats in the early 1960's was in the town of Union on Hood Canal.
One of the reasons you see so many Whalers in the area is because of old time Whaler dealer Uppy's Marina that was in Union.
My guess is it was one of the smallest towns ever to have a Boston Whaler dealership. Current population is about 1400, in the early 60's it was probably about half that.
Uppy was a great guy, always friendly to us kids when we came to visit.
He knew they were great boats, loved to talk about them and sold a ton of Whalers over the years.

Frontier,
I too have fond memories of Hood Canal Marina and Uppy. I got my first row boat from him. Yes, he and his wife were always nice to us.
Do you remember the other marina, owned by Steve Nieman? That is actually where we got our first Whaler in the early 70"s. It was not around for a very long time.
Sure was hot up there this last weekend.

I just passed these boats (not all of them present) last night ~7PM on my way back from Dabob Bay. The last bay on the east side of Hood Canal, just south of the bridge.

Dabob Bay surface water was nice and warm in most parts, and glassy calm. (The only complication was a red tide in effect for Hood Canal, so no fresh clams.)
