I just received my notice to redo my Florida tags for my boat trailers and vehciles. I purchase a small boat trailer two years ago for my sons 11 whaler, the trailer (per the title) weighs in at 300 lbs. (I think its lighter than that) I was billed for $33.10 per year to renew. I went on line to check the price because I felt that the amount was to much for the small trailer. I found on line the trailer should only be a total of $6.75 for the tag. here is what the rest was for.

Air Pollution Control $1.00, Branch fee .50, AEMS Fee .10, Juvenile Justice $5.50, Reflectorization $1.50, Service Fee $2.50, Advance RPL Fee $2.80, Decal on Demand Fee $3.00, FRVIS Fee $1.25 LERSTF $1.00, Surcharge State Trans Fee $4.00, GR Registratration Service Fee $2.50.

Talk about getting rip off by the government, Trailer Tag was $6.75 the rest ($26.35) was just in Taxes...

Amazing - they have a lot of different names for taxes.

I bought a small, used boat trailer a while back. Washington State "fees" and taxes was about 30% of what I paid for the trailer.

A few years ago during the Jennifer Granholm era in Michigan--she was our governor for two terms, a bit of a diversion from her career in television--the license plate fees for trailers were changed from a periodically renewable license plate to a permanent license plate. My boat trailer license plates used to cost about $35 and covered three years. The new plates cost me $75 and were permanent, that is permanent for the life of the trailer [as long as I owned it].

If you look at this change you can see it for what it was: a one-time grab by a desperate administration to get more tax revenue. Instead of getting $35 fees from all the re-newed trailer license plate applicants, they got $75--more than twice the revenue. This helped the State raise revenue during the Granholm administration. Of course, with every trailer registration becoming a lifetime registration, all future fees were lost. In a matter of a few years, all trailers had permanent license plates. The Granholm administration doubled their revenue from trailers during their time in office, but eliminated all future revenue from renewals for the administrations that would follow them. It turns out to be a bargain if you own the same trailer for more than about six or seven years.
