So if anyone along the Massachusetts Turnpike corridor and then to I-90, and thence westward to Chicago and points north to Milwaukee happen to see a 25 Frontier being pulled by a white Ford van tomorrow and Thursday, wave! "Last Frontier" is headed west to her new home. Took her from the sellers place to RI yesterday, only casualty is that the cowling on the kicker was not latched and was lost on the highway (Ebay has already provided a new one). Tomorrow we head west.

Any chance you'll be in Milwaukee on June 22 and 23, Dave? I'm trying to put together a little rendezvous on that weekend, and I'd love to check out your new boat. Interest in the rendezvous has been lukewarm so far. Maybe the addition of your boat will help drum up some interest.

What a nice deal. I hope you keep the name, it fits with what you do.

Thanks Guys... I'll be keeping her name, it's unlucky to rename a boat. We are running dive charter on that weekend, so will be in the Marinette, not the Whaler, out of McKinley Marina in Milwaukee loading and unoading divers. Always like to see Whalers and Whalermen, so stop by.

First stop for Last Frontier is the engine shop, she has not been run in 4 years so it's time for all of the basics to be done before I even turn the key.

Thanks... I think I-90 is a bit south for a quick visit, although I'll look. First trailering snag is a smoking wheel bearing, gladly I found it as I was stopping at a trailer place for something totally unrelated. Having all four bearings checked now, hopefully the hot spindle is still OK. I stop every 100 miles to check tires and bearings, and at the last stop it was ice cold, so with any luck it's not a big deal. Likely somebody squirted low temperature grease into the bearing buddy and it just got warm, ran out, and went dry. Tellingly the bra on the bearing buddy is missing as well. I'll know in an hour.

Darn, that could have ended poorly. Good thing you caught the bearing problem before something failed. I've been there, and it isn't fun.

Have a safe trip.

Sadly, Last Frontier is now sitting in a shop in Syracuse while I am continuing to Milwaukee. I'd stopped to check bearings and tires every 100 miles and for 500 miles all was well. Sadly the last check showed a hot bearing, gladly I was literally within sight of a trailer repair shop when I checked. The rear seal had failed, spit out the grease, and in somewhere less than 100 miles the bearing had failed and destroyed the spindle. It's a Rolls trailer, absolutely too quality, but... Needs a new axle (spindle is attached to the axle). Truck freight from Florida, etc. since its in a good shop I just left it, and will have brakes done, new tires, etc., while its sitting.

Ahh... The fun of a new (old) boat. Shoulda changed the bearing seals before leaving. I did grease them, but seals? Call it force majure.

So windy in Ohio I'm actually glad I'm not towing.

Dave - I don't know where you are, but Chicago expressways are flooded and blocked! Major rainfall overnight, about 6" to 10". Both routes through the city heading north are closed right now, the Edens and the Tollway. They are working to get them re-opened. Commuter trains are running 2 hours late, if at all, and when they don't run you know it's bad.

I-90 from Toledo east to Chicago is under a Tornado watch as the storm moves east. So will be driving though some bad stuff.

We're in insurance, and our phones are ringing off the hooks with flooded house and car claims.

About 100 miles out from Chicago, you should be able to get 780 AM newsradio. Keep it on for the all traffic updates.

Sorry to hear about the trailer bearings. Every boater's always possible nightmare.

If nothing else, this storm event should bring Lake Michigan up 6"!

Tough break Dave, though you were certainly fortunate that the notice came within sight of a trailer repair shop.

You may recall that I had to leave my Outrage/trailer behind last summer after a full wheel and hub assembly flew off at speed on the interstate in northern WI. While not quite as far as Syracuse from Milwaukee, it was sad to see my rig pull away on a flat bed truck. I empathize with your predicament.

We've had the same torrential rains Larry mentions, over many days here in Milwaukee. The Milwaukee River is raging right now, undoubtedly sending a poop flume miles out into the Lake. That combined with the likelihood of deadheads and other river origin detritus makes me think the boating isn't going to be exceptional in the area for a while yet. You won't miss many opportunities it appears.

Hey Guys, thanks. I ended up meeting the front in about Gary Indiana, it blew like CRAZY for an hour, I went thru an hour of rain, and then it cleared up. Made Milwaukee an hour ago, all OK. Went up 294 to get west of Chicago. Thanks for the heads up on the flooding I read your notes and sure appreciate the warnings. All in all I am pretty lucky, and the drive to/from Rhode Island is one I do anyhow, so... I'll visit it on the next eastbound trip and grab the boat on the next westbound trip. It's in good hands.

And Patrick, we cancelled our diving charters for the weekend after taking one look at the river. We were going to dive the Prinz Willem, right off of Milwaukee Saturday and Sunday. Chocolate brown water and floating logs like crazy in the river and harbor, like you said. Looks like diving is off for a while. Good news is that we get to pick up our new family addition a day early, a Boykin Spaniel puppy named "Deco". Perfect Boston Whalering dog. Just watch out for the poop-deck...
