OK, I need a little help. I've sold my old 1991 17' Outrage and now have narrowed my search to two nice whaler hulls. The first is a 1996 17' Outrage II powered with a 1996 130hp Yamaha. A bit dirty but the dealer is going to clean her up. He also had a nice, detailed print out detailing every issue the engine had and they were going to remediate all of them. I have put an deposit on her and was satisfied with my decision ($11,800 with a new 2800# loadrite trailer) until today, when I got a call from a North Carolina dealer telling me they would accept my offer of $12,000 for a 2000 18' Dauntless. The Dauntless has a 2000 135 Optimax engine with lower hours and an older (12 years old) trailer.

Here's my problem, undoubtedly, the Dauntless is the better boat/deal, but the rub is, it's 400 miles away. Being from NJ, getting the certificate of origin for the trailer and title for the boat is a must, but I won't be able to drive her back until I get it registered. I'm not lucky enough to drive it back to NJ without having it titled, what ever bad thing might happen, it would probably happen to me. :)

I really like the Outrage and I was able to see an 18' Dauntless today at another dealership, which made me think, do I really need something that large? The Outrage seemed nice and easy to maintain, besides being dirty, was in really good shape, all the hatches were intact and there was no crazing on the floor or in the corners. The engine was really nice and clean, had the carbs rebuilt and looked like a nice match for the boat.

Lastly, my tow vehicle is a 2003, 4.0L, Ford Ranger, 4 x 4 extended cab, I know I'll be able to tow the Outrage but have my wonders how well it would pull the Dauntless. If it were here in NJ, pulling it wouldn't be a problem, but a 400 mile trip, I'm not sure.

My gut tells me to go with the Outrage or am I just being overly cautious? My thought was to contact the dealer who has the Outrage and see if I could negotiate a little better price.

Any thoughts? Have a great night!

Go with your gut but you are getting a lot more boat in the Dauntless for only 100 lbs. more.

Dave as said go with your gut feeling, I don't think towing either will see a difference. The newer Dauntless seems a better deal so therefore talk to the Outrage dealer and whittle him down to a point where to you it becomes a no brainer which one to choose.
I personally never look at age of a piece of equipment I always look at use-age i.e. less usage and good maintenance upkeep trumps newer heavily used boat.
Good luck with your choice but 90% of the boating people always want a bigger boat (just like the admirals want).

I personally think the Dauntless is a better boat due to it's stability at rest as well as a slightly more open deck layout. That said, having already inspected the 17 in person and knowing exactly what you are getting into vs. going from pictures and hoping what you see is what you get with the 18 is worth a lot. Both boats are a step up from the 17 Outrage you had and should provide you with everything you need.

I think I might stick with the more sure thing with the new trailer and tuned up motor.

It would take a day to see the Dauntless plus a day to come home. Could the dealer not provide a temporary tag for the trailer? How long do you plan to own your next boat? Is it worth a day to be sure you get what you want?

Thanks for the replies, they are greatly appreciated. All things being equal, the Dauntless is the better deal, I don't think many will argue that point, but the questions I have, which make me lean towards the Outrage are...

1. The Outrage is a known quantity. I've seen it. The dealership is willing to make things right with the issues that were uncovered during the engine inspection.

2. New 2800# loadrite trailer.

3. Short, less than 1 hour travel time to see it.

The Dauntless is the larger boat, 4 years newer, but is sight unseen. Has more power and a 12 year old trailer.

Other things I'm considering. The dealer is not willing to do anything to the engine/trailer if, upon inspection, there are issues. It's a take it or leave it situation. I'm too close to the top end of my budget and don't feel comfortable taking a chance like that. I've learned a long time ago that I'm not that lucky!

Unless things change, I think I'm going to go with the Outrage, looks like a great boat for what I'm planning to do, fish.

Thanks again for all the help!

I have an 18 Dauntless, it is a great boat. Where in NC? I am in western NC and could take a look if not too far away.

M Gould,

Thanks for your offer, it's in Morehead City, NC. The dealer's name is:

Grandslam Yacht and Boat Sales
4906 Bridges Street
Morehead Ciy, NC

Anywhere close to you? If not, anyone else out there who might be willing to take a quick peek?

Thanks and have a wonderful day!

Dave--For the Dauntless: I don't deal with "take it or leave it" dealers. With that attitude I can guess there are [problems]. I drove 800 miles to Virginia Beach for my Outrage 17. After the sea trial, we realized the trailer lights didn't all work even though the trailer was less than one year old. The dealer's staff quickly installed a new set. They also added grease to the bearing buddies and checked the air pressure on the tires. They knew I was towing it 800 miles and did not want me to have a problem. Your call, but I would pass on that Dauntless candidate.

I will be in that area in a few weeks, but on an anniversary vacation. I like looking at boats anytime, but the better half may not be interested then. What is your time frame ?
