The [90-HP Mercury outboard enigne] on my [Boston Whaler] 170 [boat had its] oil and filter changed last spring. I did not put many hours on the motor last year. This year I started it right up. I checked the oil stick and it looked as clean as when I changed it. Think it is okay to let [the oil change] go? Or, should I change it again this season?

I would just change the filter and add some oil.

Why even change the filter if it was hardly used and the oil itself is still clean?

I recommend you follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding the interval for oil changes and oil filter changes.

The best regimen is to change the oil in the fall well the engine is laid-up for storage. In this way, when the engine sits for a long period without use it has clean oil in it.
