Some politician(s) is trying to have a cement seawall built along the south end of Longboat pass inlet(Sarasota, FL) to save a condo built in the 70's before code. The condo built a seawall to save itself and the beach is eroding because of it. They keep filling it back up with sand to the tune of $10+ mil over the years but now somebody has a brain fart and wants to build ANOTHER seawall. The problem with this is we(boaters) have been fighting for years to save our rights to beach our boats there, this will end that quickly. Please take 3 seconds to type in your name and save our beach from the politicians. |

I think it is important to save this island if only because of its name. |

It is actually a peninsula connected to long boat key. The shoreline itself is growing by taking the sand from the condo's beach(who knows). Don't know how a sea wall is going to save a condo 1/4 mile away but it will ruin our parking spots and scenery. This sea wall is called a "Terminal Groin". Who the hell wants to look at a terminal groin all day? |

It would depend on whose groin it is. regards---knothead |

The beach is more likely eroding from the jetty on the north side of the inlet. It is capturing the southbound longshore sediment transport, and thus 'stealing' it from Beer Can Island, leading to beach erosion. Perhaps a longer term solution would be to petition for the removal of that jetty. |

Good luck. Years ago the Pinellas Sheriff, the bird freaks, and a deveolper of two managed to take away Shell Island at Pass a Grille. I still don't understand why there is no lobby for boaters. You would think that all the people making money off recreational boating would back their customers and fight for boater's rights. Between the ramp fees, gas prices, manatee zones, b.s. no wake zones, 5 layers of LEOs, and loss of sandbars people are not boating like they used too. |

quote: There is: Boat/U.S., perhaps someone could contact them and see if they'd be interested in helping out. I know of at least three islands called "Beer Can" on the St. Croix and Mississippi Rivers. I also know of a Dog S**t Island; I'm unsure how that got it's name, but I suspect it is not official. |

First they take the beer away, now they want to eliminate access to the whole island. Public access to waterfront property is under attack across the United States. |

Just possibly time to organize a protest where the area boaters and all their friends will show up for a long weekend picnic with.... Yes,.. You guessed it..a tanker boat full of "ICE COLD FROTHY BEERS" I am positive that Jimbo will show support; as most of us would... |

I certainly am not a proponent of large engineered structures in beautiful beach settings. But in reading through the Notice of Intent (link to NOI is at the bottom of the article linked above)it appears the entirety of Longboat Key and Beer Can Island is eroding significantly. If you look at the Google images, tkextreme's hypothesis is supported. The longshore sediment transport in the area is north to south, with the sediment coming from north intercepted by the jetty (terminal groin)on south end of Anne Maria Island, which forms north side of Longboat Pass. The southward sediment transport is likely also being affected by the maintenance dredging of Longboat Pass iteslf. At least according to the NOI and the numerical modeling (never trust a model,)the structures will help preserve the beaches of Longboat Key, which have been eroding at a fast rate, and are still requiring additional beach nourishment. For those of you who know the area, has the beach of Beer Can Island been eroding? Is this project just protecting the property owners to the south of North Shore Rd. (e.g., the condo mentioned)? What is the long term solution? Beer Can Island may well be disappearing either way....under rocks or out to sea. If folks are serious about challenging this, doing more than a petition (good start) will be required, write emails to each of the agency representatives listed at the end of the newspaper article. The more specifics you can put into the comments about your perception of negative impacts to you (the public) and any empirical or hypothetical evidence of impacts to the environment the better. The County commissioners approval referenced in the petition is just one step. The proponent (Town of Longboat Key) needs permits at the local state and Federal level. Each of these permits has a issuance process and appeal process. |

Beer Can has been growing...quickly. The area being eroded is by the condos. |

PS...The petition is not about stopping the construction. It is about having the correct companies or agencies come in and make sure it is the proper solution....aka a 2nd opinion. |
