I'd like to trailer my Whaler down to Long Island [here everyone seems to be assuming Long Island, New York] next summer. I'm interested in any tips on where I can launch and camp. My goal is to circle the Island and take a pile of pictures of New York. Never seen it and think it would be a good way to do it. Thanks |

Long Island is huge... do you want to circle it, or use it as a jumping off place to circle Manhattan? I've done both and if you can give me an idea of what you want to do, and what timeframe you are interested in, I'll offer what I can.

Thanks Dave. I'd like to use it as a jumping off point to circle Manhattan. Never seen New York and would rather see it from water then foot. Thanks |

If you launch anyplace on Long Island, you need to run thru Hells Gate to get to the East River, which will lead you to being able to circle Manhattan. That's not a huge deal, just watch the tides. Personally, if I wanted to circle Manhattan, I would launch in Jersey City at Liberty State Park. Makes an easy run. Then take another trip to circle Staten Island on another day, looking at the ship graveyards there where there are ships from the late 1800's thru the end of WW-II laying in the mud. Plan low tide to enjoy this as many are submerged at high tide. Another plan of attack would be to launch at Great Kills marina on Staten Island. I can think of four excellent day trips from there: Circle Manhattan, passing under the Verrazano Narrows Bridge on the way, then a circumnavigation of Staten Island with a side trip into Newark Bay. Take a day to run to Sandy Hook NJ for a walk there (bring a small inflatable and you can anchor, dingy ashore, and enjoy a day). You can also run for a ride to see Coney Island and then into fringes of Kennedy Airport for yet another day. If you launch up in any of the western LI Sound ports on LI proper, you will probably be limiting yourself to a circumnavigation of Manhattan, as the other spots are more than a short run from there.

I would highly suggest anyone to check out the website " airpano". There are many high definition short films from the air of numerous famous places in the world. Manhaten, Statue of liberty, New york city, The pyramids,Miami, etc. They were filmed from two helicopters and have such clarity it will blow you away. You will want as large a computer screen as you can find to get the full effect. As a boater you will be most impressed with the Miami and New York ones. Happy viewing. |
