Tohatsu announced earlier this year that they would start selling 60 to 250 HP 4-stroke outboards made by Honda in some markets (at least North America).
Some may have wondered about the obvious gap in the hp-model range from the current Tohatsu 30 HP 4-stroke outboard to the new Honda-made 60 HP model; that gap is now reportedly being filled by two new Tohatsu “EcoSports” 40 and 50 HP 4-stroke outboards.
Based on the video and pictures of the new 40 and 50 HP 4-strokes that can be found on the web, the two new Tohatsu outboards do not seem to be based on Mercury or Honda outboard models.
The weigth for the new 3-cylinder 866 cc models is reported to be on par with 4-stroke models sold by Suzuki and Yamaha at 97 kgs (214 lbs).

Looks like Tohatsu is following Mercury and Yamaha by moving away from DFI Two Stroke engines and focusing on Four Stroke engines.

If Tohatsu dropped the TLDI outboards then one could conclude that they are moving away from DFI 2-strokes but Tohatsu has made no such announcements. Their range of TLDI outboards remains the same.

Why would they stop the TLDI engines which have proven very dependable and clean? My 90 Tohatsu has run 8 seasons with an average of 100+ trips out of the harbor each year and has not been to the dealer since being installed.
I changed the plugs once and and the water pump impeller once and changed the gear oil every fall, that's it.
I plan on replacing the motor with a 115 TLDI. If they stop making the TLDI engines I will go Etec.

Re the news from Tohatsu: it looks to me like actual announcements are being given a lot of spin to fit personal agendas.
