A lame little video for You Tube. The Chesapeake can beat you up as the bay is shallow and the waves are close together when the wind blows/ The bay can also get really nasty when there is high sustained winds. Of course it is a bay, and you will blow to one side or the other if your motor goes. It is not the Ocean or Great Lakes which I have much respect for. But it is a wide-open large body of water and there are places where you will not see land. You can turn a Montauk over on many days if you are careless.

Your Whaler will take it but it could be a long and expensive ride back to the trailer if you blow to the other side running out of gas mid bay or engine failure. It is a wild place in nature indeed. A wonderfull wild place. And if you should go down, with no life jackets aboard, on the way to Tangier.

The recording looks like it was made on a rough day, even for a 17-foot Boston Whaler.

I enjoyed cruising the bay in my 170 Montauk, but not when the wind is blowing like that. I like to take extended trips in August when the wind doesn't seem to blow as much. I try to get out on the water before sunrise and cover as much distance as possible.

A trip to Tangier Island would be interesting. How did you get there? From MD or VA? It looks like Reedville would be closer than Crisfield.

Just kidding a friend from Reedville who used to take his 14 ft aluminum V hull to Tangier. The video was made out main bay heading south I was out of Chesapeake Beach Md. I have been there many times over 25 years and about 2 in 10 times I go its smooth. It was a windy day again . As you know the wind always comes up in the afternoon on the bay it seems. Whats funny it looks like I'm riding along and I was actually just barely in gear riding not to beat up the old Whaler and me.

Getting out at sunrise is a good way to do it on the Cheasapeake. I just happen to be a late in the day sleepy head.
