When traveling in a group, it is important to keep the fleet aligned so all boat wakes are inside the wake of the boat in front of them. We try to enforce this discipline on our Great Lakes Boston Whaler Cruising Club trips. If all boats run inside the wake of the boat in front, there is no problem. When people won't follow that rule, the wakes become a giant blender and the boats behind the lead boat or two have a terrible time. I used to do some boating with other boaters who would never run inside the wake. It was a mess. I had to drop back a mile to get into clean water. It is much easier to just run inside the wake of the boat ahead. |

In the Navy, we sail in formation all the time. This is called "Division Tactics" or "DivTacs". We practice assigning one ship as the guide (usually the capital ship, i.e. the Carrier) and take position relative to it. Radio comms is crucial for giving orders where and when to execute maneuvers. The only vessel that follows in the wake of the guide is the "Plane Guard", which is assigned to rescue downed pilots who have to ditch their plane in the sea. You may have read in the news in the last 24 hours about a Chinese landing ship tank (LST) cutting in front of USS COWPENS (CG 63) to ward off shadowing their new Chinese aircraft carrier in the South China Sea. The Chinese vessel was 200 yards off the COWPENS bow when it dangerously cut in front. They were upset the U.S. Navy was tailing them in international waters. Collisions at sea are not fun. We negotiated an international agreement with the Soviet Union to avoid similar confrontations at sea. Many incidents with the Soviets occurred with submarines under the surface. |
