A few days ago Evinrude announced the addition of a new E-TEC 65-HP outboard engine model to their Pontoon Series of outboard engines. The Pontoon Series of the E-TEC are specifically designed for application in the pontoon boat market. The E-TEC 65-HP model will have specific features for pontoon applications like:
--different gear ratio intended to produce higher thrust and more stopping power
--remote oil reservoir tank, permitting up to 200-hours of operation before refilling
--motor mounts designed to further reduce vibration by being more elastic
--Ultra-Low emissions: CARB Three-Star and EU, and extremely low Carbon Monoxide emission
The E-TEC Pontoon Series has models for 65-HP, 90-HP, 115-HP, and 150-HP. Pontoon Series E-TEC engines are marked on the cowling with a "Pontoon Series" identifier.

Two cylinder or three cylinder. The announcement doesn't specify.

Amazing how many pontoon boats are being sold.
My local boat and outboard dealer says they are a huge seller nowadays. Fastest growing boating segment.
Makes sense - low cost, lots of living space, low outboard HP requirement, and very economical to operate.

It could be the 2 cylinder powerhead that they used in the commercial 65 hp engine for a while. They might be using a bigger lower unit/prop with this engine. Will be interesting to see if it is.

Sadly, it missed the mark and is based upon the 3 cylinder 90hp engine.
If it was based upon the 2 cylinder then it would have been a big hit but since it is based on the the larger heavier engine I am not a fan. I dont see ANY benefit over the 90hp Pontoon.

OMCrobert, please show your source. I agree that based on a 3 cylinder 90 isn't a good idea. Based on the commercial 65 makes more sense.

I would be very excited if it was 2 cylinder but sadly it is not. I understand that Evinrude is trying to cover as many bases with existing products as possible (i.e. [literally "that is"], 15 H.O and 135) they are missing the mark in my opinion. A de-rated 75-HP with the 90-HP Pontoon accessories and re-badged to 65-HP. The 65hp Pontoon three-cylinder weighs almost 100-lbs more than the 65-HP commercial two-cylinder.
