posted 12-31-2013 04:04 PM ET (US) I have a 2005 conquest 235 w/225 verado. It has always had an annoying power steering pump whine. I read on a forum somewhere that they added a shunt in 2006 to cure this. Anyone know what a "shunt" is and if I could do this myself. I suppose I should check with a dealer but it's such a pain going to them! Any input would be appreciated.

David,
Why not just consult with the service manager?

Its caller Mercury Verado power steering hose dampener and it sells for $ 80-90 at the dealer.its about 24 inches long and if you have any skills its do it yourself job. If you are already doing this it is a good idea to replace fluid since mercury recommends new fluid every 5 years( its self bllding so no PIA bleeding like traditional hydraulic sea ster steering system ). I did it to my 2005 200 Verado and it did help significantly . Also make sure that pump always stays dry and your batteries are fully charged since pump works continuously and needs good to excellent batteries power source to operate. When you turn your steering wheel when operating your boat try not to go to the end on either side since that activity would tripple batteries draining. Always keep fluids level to the top of the level line. If you take care of your pump it will take care of you.Having catastrophic failure while somewhere offshore is not fun. You will able to steer it but it will be limited to bring you home. Docking and maneuvering at the dock will be a work of art. Hope this help. Andrew
