Our sailing club is repowering 2 13ft Sport Whalers used as teaching and rescue boats. One has a notched transom and the other is a 1974 with a full transom.
Current power is a couple of carb'd 2 stroke OMC motors from the 70"s, one 25 hp and the other 35 hp. Performance of the 30 year old 35 hP Evinrude is satisfactory.

We are going with Etec because our two other 2 boats already have Etecs and there are two Etec dealers nearby.

We'd appreciate input on the choice between 30 and 40 HP for this application. Usual load is two teenaged instructors, say 300 lbs. Most of the time the boats are idling or running 5 knots while teaching sailing, but planing runs of 3 miles are frequent.

The 30 HP Etec weighs 177 lbs and the 40 HP (also just a 2 cylinder) weighs 250 lbs.

Neither choice is available in 15 inch shaft length. We need electric start and power trim and tilt. Both are remote control.

We'd prefer the 30 HP Etecs due to weight and a cost savings of $1500 per motor.

My question is will the 30 HP Etec plane a 13 ft Whaler if 4 people are on board at less than full throttle?.

Thanks for any thoughts based on personal experience.

Jim -- The 30 HP E-TEC will be more than adequate. The 40 HP model is nice (my father-in-law has one on a 17' Triumph) but far too heavy for a 13 footer with anything but a light load.

Part of the weight penalty for the 40 HP model is the fact ithass the same size gearcase as other models up to 130 HP. It is a VERY robust gearcase design for a 40 HP motor and can be used on boat much larger than a little 13 foot Whaler.

The 30 HP E-TEC is more appropriate.

The 30 HP E-TEC is the way to go on the 13 Sport. The 1977 Evinrude 35 on my 13 Sport had no problem getting on plane with 4 people. The 30 E-TEC has more displacement than the motors you currently have. With that greater displacement and the DFI system, I would expect the E-TEC 30 to have better low end and mid-range power.

The 40 HP E-TEC is too heavy.

We repowered a very nice 13' Sport this past summer with a 30 HP E-TEC. The owner wanted a Yamaha, but wanted performance that was equal or better then the original Evinrude 35. We decided the 30 HP E-TEC was the right choice and both of us were really pleased with the result. The boat's waterline did not need to be changed due to the weight difference and the performance was excellent.

Great video and performance updates on the 25hp Etec. I also agree that 30hp would be a perfect engine for the 13 whaler.

OK, thanks everyone.

Just the feedback I was hoping for.

Next, I'll hope that as a club we will get the 3yr warranty + 3 years extended warranty as part of the current incentive. Commercial operators only get one year.
