Watch out for a Pristine 2001 13 ft Whaler, 40 HP motor, trailer for $2,400. Florida plates and palm trees in photos: purported to be in Oklahoma.

Does look a little suspicious. Of course, the owner may have moved from FL to OK and that's why he's selling the Whaler.

If it is a scam, how would it work? Do they just put up a picture of any boat, and then expect you to send them a deposit sight unseen? Who would fall for that? At this time there is in Orlando Craigslist a picture of a 50hp 4 stroke Yamaha in a crate(looks new) that says motor runs great, I think the price is $1750. No other details just an email address.

There is an Outrage in the Tucson Craigslist that seems to be a scam as well. That one responded to my query to the Craigslist email by insisting that I use my own email address. I guess there is some angle to harvesting email addresses. It does not seem that flagging will make that one disappear.

The 13 footer was posted in Milwaukee Craigslist a while back. Obviously a scam. These guys are playing the percentages: there's always SOMEONE who'll send a deposit... C'mon, folks, if it looks to be to good to be true..... you know the rest.

As Skred says!
And as a friend reminds; if you have to ask, you know the answer in these cases.
Life is too short to get involved with trash.

By the way, if it is such a great deal that you could drive half way across the country, someone locally would have snatched it yesterday.

Good luck to the Human Beings!

These scams are VERY common. I see them on the local craigslist about twice a month here in Seattle.

The telltales always include a too-good-to-be-true low price, an out-of-state registration number (or blacked out registration number) combined with a background that does not look like the local environment. For example, there are not that many palm tress in Seattle, so when I see them in the background of the photos, I am suspicious.

That 50 HP Yamaha outboard in a crate scam Binkster was talking about in Orlando just showed up on Seattle CL again this morning. It's been all around the country several times.
Just flag it.

The stupidity of the human race never fails to astound me. I wish I could remember the URL of an article I read on some successful scams - they boggle the mind - people giving tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars away for one scheme or another.

That's why we keep seeing Nigeria emails - if they send out five million, there's a very good chance there are one or maybe several idiots in that group.

I've had some strange responses on Craigslist like are mentioned here. The one where they ask for your email so they can complete the deal is pretty obvious. My policy is that anyone who is unwilling to have a voice conversation is off my list to buy and sell.

I use the same policy as 17 bodega for ebay as well...no talk no sale. The one time I deviated from that I got had. The 18' parachute anchor I bought shrank to a 4'sea anchor during shipping. I was more pi$$ed at PayPal and E-bay for standing behind the scammer than I was at the scammer himself. They ruled that a 4' sea anchor was not different enough from a 18' parachute anchor to be considered a fraud; Visa reversed the charges on paypal, and I will never use paypal again.

The 50hp 4 stroke Yamaha for $1750 is still being offered by this mail order company. It was for sale on Craigslist Orlando , and I understand was also offered on Craigslist in Seattle. It looks like a legitimate company, but the price is too attractive. Check out how to pay on their website. BTW they answered my inquiry from Craigslist Orlando

The price is $1550 not $1750, even a better deal. Also a new 25 hp mercd for $995
