Would the V-20 have significantly better offshore performance than the 18 OUTRAGE? I have the 18' and with 2-3' seas I can't go but about 20-MPH. There is a 20' hull for sale and I would like to know if it would be worth the trouble to get it. Peace

No. I have a V-20 and it's definitely not an offshore boat, it's a very good bay boat. As for an 18 OUTRAGE, I think it'd do better. Buckda and I did a 20 mile run in three-foot to five-foot seas in the North Channel and his 18 OUTRAGE did much better than my V-20.

My experience has been that 20-MPH is about the best you can expect in a boat in the under-25-foot range when running in the open ocean unless conditions are very calm. If you want to go significantly faster, you will need a larger boat and the resulting increase in cost.

Hoosier is right. The V-20 has a similarly sharp V entry at the bow, however, the bottom is much flatter at the stern than the 18' Outrage, which carries the deeper V further aft. The result is that both boats require similar power to drive them, however, the 18' will cut the chop better. However, again, we're talking marginal improvements; they're still rather small boats for true three-foot-chop. Part of how my 18 did better than David's 20 was due to the use of trim tabs and my engines were mounted 10" back on setback brackets, which you might consider as less expensive options to a bigger boat.
If you're talking about the later 20' Outrage which is often referred to as "the same hull as the 22' Outrage with 2' removed at the stern end", then you will see marginal improvement over the 18' Outrage, vs. no benefit other than interior deck space for the earlier V-20 Outrage.
The difference between the V-20 from the late 70's early 80's and the somewhat rarer mid 80's Outrage 20 is significant.

There is really no small boat that goes well into three-foot head seas.
Most of my boating is on the Great Lakes; here there are short-period waves. If a boat is long enough so that it can be on more than one wave all the time, it will produce a better ride than a shorter boat that goes up and over each wave individually. On the ocean, with long-period swell, all boats are going up and over each wave individually, unless they are really long boats, maybe 50-footers.
The older OUTRAGE V-20 looks, to me, like it would be a nice boat for calmer water because I think it would be easier to plane. Its flatter aft hull should give it more lift and get on plane with less horsepower than a hull with a deeper-V design. I have not experimented with this, myself, and I don't recall seeing any good data. David's experience with his V-20 and a modest 115-HP SUZUKI engine seem to lend some support to the theory the V-20 can be pushed onto plane and kept there by modest horsepower. I don't think I have been underway on David's boat, so I can't appreciate how it rides.

Mike is on the Western Gulf, I'll have my V-20 on the Eastern Gulf next month and I'll see how she does "outside". I really don't think I'll spend much time out of the inshore waters, she isn't a blue water boat. 20 MPH isn't possible in anything over 2'.
