Whaler announces new 420 Outrage to be shown at the Miami Boat Show. Should be interesting to see where they go with this.

Wow, a 42 footer. New waters for Boston Whaler. It will be interesting.

I wonder if it will be leaning more towards big time fishing or big time cruising

I know there has been a lot of discussion about Whaler's emphasis on bigger boats vs. smaller boats, but its good to have the brand of our choice at least making great boats either way. They are in the game

A 42ft "unsinkable" boat. This is a first. I wonder if it will require 4 outboards to run well.

Is it going to have 10 Verado engines hanging on the rear?

While there was a mention of a 42-foot OUTRAGE being planned in July 2013, it was a bit oblique and sparse on details.

Can we have a pointer to somewhere Boston Whaler has announced this? I don't see it on their website at this moment.

Jim, it's posted on social media. The Official Boston Whaler Owners' Club Facebook page. Sorry, no easy link to copy to url.

It's not a bad looking boat but jeez, is that really a ten foot long tinted window in the topsides?

I count four big Verados on the Euro-transom

Yes, it looks like a long, long window on the sides.
I would vote to delete that

It also looks like 4 Verados on the back transom.

Looking at the model and after downloading and enlarging the picture it appears that may be be four Mercury engines on the transom. We may be looking at 1200 hp rating.

Bigger is better seems to work these days for Boston Whaler.

I don't know whether the base price of the yet to be built 420 Outrage has been announced but I predict that the base price for the 420 Outrage will be approximately $680,000 and the dry weight will be 17,500 lbs. It might be a bit higher because I did not include the 320 Cuddy in the data.

I formed my prediction on price by plotting price versus length for the Outrage series and then having Excel fit a polynomial curve to the plot to derive a polynomial formula. I did the same for price versus dry weight for the Outrage serice but then used the price predicted in the price versus length to solve for the weight. You can see the plots at i177.photobucket.com/albums/w231/Whaler-Fleet/CW%20Posts/ Pricing_zps23affc2b.jpg .

My intuition tells me the new 420 Outrage will have a price significantly higher than $680,000

I am sure that providing a URL helps more people than just me locate the data. It is too bad it is on website that you have to sign-on with an account to see. I don't understand why people limit information distribution to websites like that. I can't get to any of the information there because I don't have an account.

Peter--That is a rather crafty analysis of the price information. The slope of your price as a function of length curve is approaching infinity.

Nothing really new in this release, but does confirm quad Verados for power.

JimH -- Isn't that where the boat manufacturers' prices are heading and of course the incentive for them to go ever bigger? Some day soon we will see a 720 Outrage. ;)

They say Bugatti parent company Volkswagen loses over $6 Million on EACH $2.4 Million Bugatti Veyron sold.
At what point is a Showcase/Showoff product not worth it?
Is the PR and tech-testing worth it?
How many Montauks does Boston Whaler have to sell to make up the loss on ONE 420 Outrage?
OMCrobert posted 02-14-2014 03:37 PM ET (US)     Profile for OMCrobert  Send Email to OMCrobert
The 420 Outrage Boston Whaler will most likely have the highest profit margin of any boat in the Boston Whaler line up for Brunswick Corporation.

It will most likely be double the price of the 370 Outrage with only one more engine, the same basic systems and more fiberglass.

I highly doubt they will lose money on them.

Not being in the business of boat building, I cannot offer any first-hand experience with the profit margin as a function of boat size, but my general understanding, based on reading some recent comments from an executive of a modern-day fiberglass boat builder, there is a general trend that larger boats mean more profit as a percentage of the total price. However, that same executive commented that smaller boats can also be very profitable when the process of building them has been industrialized, and I think you could safely say that the process of making a 170 MONTAUK has become very industrialized.

I take my guidance from an interview with an executive at Beneteau, one of the largest builders of boats in the world. The interview was in an issue of TRADE ONLY last fall.

http://www.tradeonlytoday.com/features/manufacturers/beneteau/ qa-benetau-america-president-laurent-fabre/

The executive says:

quote:
...the larger the boat, usually the larger the margins for the manufacturer, although if you’re looking at small boats, which are extremely consistent and very industrialized with very few options, the margins at the end of the day are really comfortable, compared [to 40-footers]...

"It will most likely be double the price of the 370 Outrage with only one more engine, the same basic systems and more fiberglass."

That would put the base price tag at $900,000 and at that price it would be well beyond what the market for these boats would bear. An Intrepid 475 Sport Yacht (5 feet longer) is about $750,000.

OMCrobert posted 02-14-2014 06:13 PM ET (US)     Profile for OMCrobert  Send Email to OMCrobert
Ok, 60% to75% more than the 370 Outrage. Regardless, the systems would be similar and it would only be one more engine.
OMCrobert posted 02-15-2014 09:17 PM ET (US)     Profile for OMCrobert  Send Email to OMCrobert
The new 475 Intrepid Center Console with Quad 350hp Yamaha's and a tower is at the Miami Boatshow with a special price of $999,999.
Peter posted 02-16-2014 05:42 AM ET (US)     Profile for Peter  Send Email to Peter
$999,999 is not the base price for an Intrepid 475.
OMCrobert posted 02-16-2014 11:20 AM ET (US)     Profile for OMCrobert  Send Email to OMCrobert
It is the boat show special price for the loaded boat. It does illustrate that the market can and does handle huge numbers for outboard center consoles.

I wager that new 53-foot Intrepid with triple and quad Seven Marine outboard engines would be near the $1.5 million mark.

I do agree with you that the base price of the new 420 Outrage would be right around $675k and fully loaded near $750k.

jimh posted 02-19-2014 05:55 PM ET (US)     Profile for jimh  Send Email to jimh
Although at the Miami International Boat Show 2014 the sales guys only had a model of the new 420 OUTRAGE to show prospective buyers [and to clarify, I mean a scale model not a full-size model], this did not deter several from placing orders. I don't know what the boat-show-special price was, but basing it on what a 370 OUTRAGE goes for, in must have been well over $500,000.

It shows enormous faith in the ability of Boston Whaler to come through with great product to place an order for a half-million-dollar-or-more boat without actually seeing the boat.

I spoke with a Boston Whaler dealer today about this boat and boat show price was $710k and they have already sold a few sight unseen.

Peter was spot on with his price prediction. Well done. Street price would be exactly what he stated or extremely close.

The local Sea Hunter dealer, Plantation Boat Mart, reportedly sold at the show four 45 foot models with quad 350 v8 Yamaha engines.

The Miami Boat Show special price was one million rigged. The market for the boats exist. Three of the boats are being shipped to overseas buyers.

I had the opportunity to watch the sea trials from my home and could easily observe that close quarter maneuvering was difficult even with quad engines.Booming sound system though and a 60" flat screen TV with lots of boat fluff on deck.

Well, with the way Whaler designs their layouts these days with California transoms, gigantic consoles, and enough lounging area to make a French Riviera pool proud, the new 42 Outrage might appoach the deckspace provided in an older 27 outrage.

Looks like a computer generated image rather than a real picture of the boat. Maybe its a picture of their 3 foot model against an artificial background.

As soon as I saw this picture I remembered seeing a similar picture of the Outrage 370 Whaler in the same position with the same background. I found a photo of that here www.flickr.com/photos/officialbostonwhalerownersclub/5559061263/in/ photostream/ . Note the similar background, calm water and position of the boats.

That is indeed a fake background. No way mountains that far back can cast a shadow that can seen in quite that perspective. In fact I don't think you could see one at all.
