Hi. I plan to buy my first motor boat and have a budget in the $10,000 to $11,000 range. I am in New England and plan to use a boat primarily in a protected ocean bay. I have three children and I am looking for a boat to tube, ski, and cruise. I'd like the boat to be useful even when the kids get older and be something that is easy to trailer. Asking too much?
The 1997 DAUNTLESS 15 is about $9,000; the 1996 OUTRAGE 17 is about $11,000, and the 1999 DAUNTLESS 16 is about $12,000. Thanks.

The OUTRAGE 17 is the longest hull, and it is the hull most suited for use in the Ocean.

Take a look a the 1995 thru 1997 17' Dauntless also.
Dual console, lightweight, low power requirement, smooth ride and lots of living room and storage.
Great family boat. Excellent for water sports.
Styling was unusual (side view - windshields in the center of the boat).
The one we had was one the of best all-around Whalers we've ever owned.

Do yourself a favor before making the decision: the layout difference between the center console Outrage series and the dual console Dauntless series is significant. If you're briefed on the layouts I apologize, but if not, take a look at each of them. The center console really eats up space and doesn't offer much for comfort; the dual console does. I've have a Outrage 19 for 13 years and am looking to go to dual console so I can sit down, take other people comfortably out. That may play into family. For sure if you're running kids around, mom, "stuff" you have to bring, the dual console is the way to go; you will be a bit upset (mom too, a biggie) with the Outrage. A 16-foot or 18-foot dual console Dauntless--you may have to finance [more of the cost], but [the additional cost will be] worth it. Minimum 115-HP, but go up to 150-HP if you can.

I'd recommend you keep shopping and hold out for a 1998 [or newer] Dauntless 18 or Ventura 18. They can be had in your price range, meet the criteria you laid out, and offer more ample seating than the models you mentioned.
The Ventura is especially family friendly; your passengers will love the bow seating area.

You cannot sit down to operate a 17-foot boat unless you are running in very calm seas. I drive a 24-foot boat, and, in most of the sea conditions I am running in, I find it much more comfortable to stand at the helm compared to sitting. The days when you can sit are rare, unless you are boating on a mill pond.

sullyjhn - I have the '96 17 Outrage and have never been in a Dauntless - but the points made by Jimh are right on. On my boat, one can set or stand at the helm, but in rough water, you are much more comfortable standing. And I would not be hesitant about putting my boat in the ocean.
The center console is nice as one can easily move around the boat when fishing. I have had four adults on my boat with three fishing (trolling) and there is no problem.
But I like my Outrage for other reasons as well - the deeper gunwales makes it safer with small kids - the slightly heavier boat makes it ride smoother, particularly in rough water, and hence makes it more enjoyable for everyone in the boat - albeit taking a bit more power (I have the 115 Johnson) - and the drain from the fuel tank area is nice.
My boat does everything I want - fish, dink around, pulling the kids on tubes. ---- Jerry/Idaho

Thanks for the responses- I figure I have another few weeks to make a final decision , so I'll keep my eyes open. I do like the look of a center console but never even thought of the steering position. Additionally, In New England the 18' dauntless (post 98) are in the 18k range which is out of my ballpark.

I'd keep looking for the Dauntless, they are out there. It took me a while but I found several that were in the $10K to $12K range. I finally decided on a 1999 17' Outrage II but I have to confess, I did like the layout of the Dauntless, in addition to the little extra length, (18' vs, 17'6"), the 18' Dauntless, also a center console, had an 8' beam vs. the 7' beam of the Outrage. Both weighed in about the same. Don't be afraid to travel.

I have a 1996 Outrage. I have used it in and around the waters of the Elizabeth Islands MV, Nomans, ACK, etc. Very Very capable boat. I have also used it to water ski, cruise, etc on one of the Finger lakes in NY. If fishing is on the list of things you will be doing, the 17 Outrage is a much better platform than a Dauntless.
Personally, when traveling at speed on any small boat, if find sitting very awkward, even more so on a dual console.

The 99 Dauntless 16 is a really versatile family boat. Plenty of seating, a lot of interior room for a 16 footer, plenty of dry storage and easy to tow. I also like the built-in boarding ladder for tubing. My dad has one that sees regular duty with a gaggle of grandkids every summer and it's been terrific for that. Runs pretty well with a 2-stroke 90.

Had both boats .No comparison.Apples and oranges .17 outrage wins by far.
You know how you will know this.
See how many 16-18 dauntless and how many 17 outrage you will find for sale and that will tell you all.
People dont give them up.Awesome boat.Ride is amazing and boat would not occasionally pound like semi V dauntless.
If you can find one with Mercury or Yamaha under 10 K buy her right away.You will not regret trust me .

As a former owner of a Dauntless 16 I advise against buying the boat for your purposes. They are wonderful little boats and I enjoyed mine for ten years, but they are just too small for a family of five to enjoy over the long haul. As your children grow the boat will become even smaller. The 16 could be a good starter boat for you and you may find you like it more later as your children discover the lure of the opposite gender and no longer are quite as enamored with family activities. If you buy a Dauntless 16 do not buy one with less than 115 HP as it is entirely unsuited to water sports with five aboard.
