Brunswick CEO Dustin McCoy was recently interviewed on Jim Cramer's "Mad Money" tv show. Did you know Jim Cramer owns a 170 Montauk?

That TV guy must not be making much money, or maybe he is not a serious boater. I have worked with a lot of TV on-camera guys who were boaters. They all had boats a lot bigger than a 17-foot outboard skiff. |

I think I am correct in assuming you were making a joke Jim.There certainly are numerous extremely wealthy "serious boaters" in my neck of Cape Cod who happen to own Boston Whaler Montauks and Sports... Although I'd personally give Mr. Cramer a little more credit if he owned a "classic".

Jim must have received some bad investment advice from Mr. Cramer and now he is "mad".It probably was to invest in Bombardier :). |

Did you ever read, "The millionaire next door"? Perhaps, you would realize that many wealthy people got to that point not overextending themselves on debt with a boat they truly could not afford. This in essence, says a great deal why this country is in so much trouble right now. |

Is the premise here that boat ownership is first and foremost about conspicuous display of wealth? Is it about setting oneself apart from the masses to gain a transient illusory moment of superiority?I am no fan of that Mad Money guy; he's a disgrace, kind of the Jerry Springer/Rush Limbaugh shock-jock wind-bag-on-crack (or maybe he's snorting Oxycodin with Rush) of financial infomercials. That being said, why not go for the best boat in category? I suppose it is possible he spent all his money on crack, but let's give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that he is smart, is there a better boat than the Montauk in that category? Of course, in addition to his little Whaler, it is also possible he has a big boat that is not a Whaler. Personally, I prefer smaller boats to big boats, more like a sports car as opposed to a motor home. Perhaps as I age more and my knees give out, I will adapt my preferences. |
