Hey guys I'm wondering if anybody knows if you can add Pettit Easypoxy over a antifouling bottom paint. The paint on the boat is fading and is due for another coat. At this point rather than applying another coat of anti fouling I wanted to use the easyepoxy off white instead. Boat will be stored on a trailer.

I would not do that. It would "pin" the old bottom pain under a layer of epoxy and make it that much more difficult to remove later.

I am also fairly certain the Easypoxy is meant for above waterline use only, not bottoms, though for a trailered boat it would probably work fine...if applied to the bare hull.

I'd be concerned about adhesion to the old bottom pain, especially if it were an ablative.

Why not just remove the old bottom paint? If the bottom is rough, put a coat or Pettit Vivid on, which works fine on trailered boats and is available in WHITE which can be tinted to match the gel coat color of your hull.

They seem to make an "off white" color I'm wondering if that would match up well. I see you what you mean by not adhearing to the bottom paint. That was what I was thinking would happen. It's too bad you can't tint a white bottom paint to match. Done deal.

I do not understand what you are saying here.

It would just simplfy the task. At this point I realistiacally have to sand it all off somehow to apply a totally differnt product. It would be nice to take a basic white anti fouling and tint it to match the off white the classic whalers gelcoat color.

Easypoxy is a misnomer. It is only a single stage enamel, not really suitable for Boston Whalers, as it will depreciate the boat big time. It is an easy paint to use, and looks decent when new, but it will fade in less than 2 years. Its popular on boats that have very little value. An now you want to use Easypoxy to paint over your bottom paint. OMG!!

No I'm looking for information so that I make the right decision. What I would prefer is to have a bottom paint that will match the boats gelcoat rather than an ugly "basic" color bottom paint.

So why not tint the Pettit Vivid to match your hull?

Tom i Just finished reading your thread. I don't see any reason why you can't! Very excited about this. I don't think too many know about this and assume that they will have to repaint a basic color. To be fair in most cases that is fine for many. However some boat manufactures still use the off white.

That's why I suggested it but of course leave it to Tom to already have thought of this as well confirmed a actual example. Good work!

Martyn, the Pettit Vivid is a good idea. However, not all AF paints are compatible, so you'll need to be careful. If memory serves (it often doesn't) the Vivid is a hard epoxy paint, so you could apply it over another similar paint. If there's something else on there, or you don't know what type of paint it is, you may want to have the existing paint soda blasted off. You can then check and reapply a barrier coat, if needed, followed by the tinted Vivid.

An alternative is to use something called a tie coat, which is formulated to cover up whatever you have on there and allow the new paint to bond - but if it were me, I'd prefer to start clean and new.

The paint company websites have a lot of good info on this.

Single part urethanes are also called urethane enhanced enamels.
Good products for certain things.

Looks like you have found a direction that may suit you.

Do not hesitate to call product mfg. and ask question.

If you need bottom paint, use it and do not get excited about having bottom paint on your boat.
If you do not need it, you might let it wear off while you are enjoying the use of the boat.

We spend too much time worrying about what they should look like and not enough time using them!

Have fun

Although I really like Pettit Vivid, the is a BRAND NEW Pettit paint: Hydrocoat SR ECO that also comes in WHITE.
It's like the other Hydrocoats which are water-based and cleans up with soap and water, but is totally COPPER -FREE and (SR) slime resistant.

According to the insert/directions, it goes over just about any other bottom paint. I see no reason why this couldn't be tinted as Tom W Clark has done with Vivid.
I just ordered a gallon for our 28, and a quart for our 13 Super Sport.
The best prices I could find were from www.go2marine.com . They also shipped free, and no sales tax.

Interesting.. I will look into that new paint. Sounds almost too good to be true. Getting away from toxic chemicals is a good thing.

macfam could not find the white listed on the manufactures website. I knew there had to be a catch.

I see what you mean, it's not offered by www.go2marine.com, but Pettit shows it.(see above)
Keep hunting via the internet, I'm sure someone will carry it.
Surely it will be expensive, but not out of reach.
