I am about to join the family of Whaler owners, but need some help first. I live in Rhode Island and am purchasing a boat in Florida. I need a survey done.

The boat is a 22' Dauntless from 2001 that was completely refurbished in 2013 including several accessories that were offered on the later 230 Dauntless including aluminum T-Top, and the rear all activity tower. It was also re-rigged in 2013 with a new Yamaha F225, (mfg in 2011).

It appears that these are all Boston Whaler original parts, and my understanding is that this was done at a Whaler dealer, but the boat was a trade-in. Therefore there is no paperwork, and no one to talk to who did the work.

The engine is under warranty, so my biggest concern is really having someone who knows older whalers make sure the hull is sound, and the re-rigging was all done to the appropriate standard of work, particularly because the F225 is 62-lbs heavier than the old 225 Opti's intended for the hull.

Any recommendations based on personal experience would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help!!

I can't recommend a true surveyor, but if the seller will take it someplace to be 'checked out' by a mechanic, Lauderdale Marina might be a good spot.

They've sold more Whalers over the years than just about anyone, and I'd trust their opinions on a Whaler more than any other random pick. Particularly if you are more interested in the hull then the engine.

Not sure if I would call it an "older whaler", being only 13 years old. My 1991 is barely breaking in. Pretty sure 95% of member's boats are older thant that!
