I have been trying to decide the best way to get some redundancy when it comes to power for my single engine Outrage. My current engine is getting a lot of hours on it 950+ and I feel uneasy about going offshore with just the single engine. Currently it has a 200 Opti Max, have any of you guys added a kicker to a 2004 or newer 21’ Outrage. If so what type of bracket, controls & horse power did you use? Is it realistic to think I could add a kicker that would hang properly and be able to push the boat up to 8-10 MPH? We currently do a lot of trolling between 2-5 mph and I think this motor would be a great addition to our trolling setup. I ran a new 24 footer by my co-captain and she did not like that idea.

Thanks for the advice!

I have a 1994 19' Outrage which is currently on the sidelines until I repower. I'll be repowering with a four stroke & will no longer use the trolling motor bracket. Let me know if you want to see a photo

A point of reference: I have a 1997 21 Outrage with a 9.9 horsepower kicker engine. Top speed while running the kicker is about 6 miles per hour. It's great for trolling for striped bass at 2-4 miles per hour. I have to use the main engine to troll at 6-8 miles per hour when fishing offshore.

Another thought, your current motor is nearing 1,000 hours. With that said & depending on compression tests, a mechanic run through, & if in the cards financially, put the $2,500-3,000 you'll spend on a mid size trolling motor & repower with a new 250 HP E-TEC, Suzuki, or Yamaha. I troll all day long with my 200 E-TEC on my other boat & it doesn't miss a beat. It's also great not having to mess with a trolling motor when getting setup, EZ-steer mechanism, fuel, etc. Not to mention in our Outrage Whaler world cantilevering 130 lbs off the transom is the worst distribution of weight possible. My boat runs so much better without the trolling motor on.....you just power down, trim the motor where you want it to troll & you're fishing...same goes on the way out. I know you lose the comfort of a backup motor but with what I do & the dependability of the new motors, it's a non-issue. Just a thought but I'm guessing that motor new would run around $18K.

Thanks for all the responses, my current Opti Max does a great job trolling down to two MPH but I was looking for some redundancy. I looked at a new 225 Yamaha and they quoted around $23,000. For that kind of money I may just look for a new boat.

Hi
Was in your shoes 3 years ago with my 2002 210 and 200 optimax. I did ton of research trying to figure out how to add kicker bracket to extremely kicker unfriendly euro transom of 210 that has trim tabs to make it even more fun.
Found 2 different set ups from 2 different owners but I went with my own design that once done was so sturdy that it could hold another 200 optimax. Took 2 weeks to measure, cut, remeasure, install, sea trial and finally attach 9.9 HP mercury 4stroke kicker. Once installed it did great job pushing boat trolling or lake fishing with 10 HP restrictions.

If you would like to see my set up send me your email.I still have wood mock up version before I started cutting SS pipes.
Sold that boat and got 2005 210 with 200 Verado that weights 660LB and with 100 kicker would go over transom limit of 710 LB and would void any insurance so I dont have kicker on new boat.

Honestly I wouldnt do it again.210 transom is so kicker unfriendly that it was always PIA to operate kicker .

I would certainly do it again given the engine hour saving, fuel savings and peace of mind having an auxiliary/kicker

My only regret was not being able to get a white Etec to match my main

I found with dual binnacle set up and power lift and electric start the kicker was a joy to use

You may find several postings on my project but some of the links were to imageshack which are dead now

You can now find the images here http://s707.photobucket.com/user/SJUAE/library/Kicker
