[Comparing a Boston Whaler MONTAUK boat made in the 1970's to one made in the 1980's,] is the gel coat the same[?] The older gel coat looks nicer. [Is that because of use of] different resins? Or, more time spent in assembly[?]

Please be more specific in your characterization of "looks nicer." What characteristic of the gel coat resin are you commenting about?

Also, if you are comparing a c.1970 boat to a c.1980 boat, and you are comparing their appearance now, there could be as much as twenty years difference in their age. One boat could be more than 40 years old and another just over 20 years old. And during that time, there is no basis to assume that the boats were subjected to the same weathering. I don't know that you can have a reasonable basis to assume that any difference you observe now, perhaps 40 years after the gel coat was sprayed on, is due to some difference in the resin that was used.

Jim,I agree. I was a bit nebulus...
You stated

Looking at 2 montauks. There is an 85 Montauk, stress cracks a plenty, Bottom paint..rotting wood backing plates.
I read all your adbvice and looked for fiberglass, backing plates, , de lamination etc. Old tranducer filling,6300. There is Fairing compound on keel BUT it has an 2002 Johnson 90. The 74 (picture ) has no paint, no fillins, no hull repaires, a few chips of course, but the hull looks whiter. AND it looks like it can be polished to brilliance. The 74 (I think) has an 88 m70 evinrude. A great motor but noit a 200 90hp Johnson. The 1988 70 Evinrude is a great motor though. the 70's montauk hull has a 9.9 kicker as well. see photo. she looks new.

Gosh darn, how do you post photos? Ill look at the site, im sure instructions are there.

Re the color or hue of the hull gel coat on a Boston Whaler:

There are several shades for the gel coat color. For 16-footers, see the REFERENCE article at

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/16-17/

and note the entry under the specification "Color" and the epoch c.1973. Whaler changed to Desert Tan from White for the hull color. There are some other shades involved, too. Outrage Gray is another gel coat color used on some models.

Any gel coat resin left out in the sun for 40-years will change color. The color or hue seen at the present moment is a result of the weathering, exposure to sun, amount of care taken, use of polish, buffing, waxing, gel coat restorer compounds, and who know what else. Also the colors look different under different lighting. It is best to compare them in daylight on a not cloudy afternoon, side by side.
