The Coast Guard is holding hearings and public discussions on future navigation technologies. These hearings will be held all around the country (see link below). Sounds like these could be a very interesting to attend.

Don--Thanks for posting this notice. The public meeting in Port Huron on June 12, 2014 seems to be the one closest to me. I may attend.

Jim--if you do go please bring up these two things: 1) Rescue 21 has a big coverage hole in Lake Superior since there is no coverage for Isle Royale NP, and 2) the US and Canadian DSC systems are not integrated. If the Canadian Coast Guard receives a DSC SOS from a boat with a US MMSI number they can’t ID the boat since they aren’t connected to the US MMSI database. I think this is a critical issue in the Great Lakes and the Pacific NW.

Sounds like USCG is discussing LORAN-C replacement and how badly we want a GPS backup system.

I just spoke with a very nice gentleman and officer (Lt. Jacobsen) of the USCG regarding the public meeting or "listening session" scheduled to occur in Port Huron this week, June 12, 2104, at the Double Tree Hotel. The meeting will take place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. There will be presentations from NOAA, the Coast Guard, and the Army Corps of Engineers. There is no cost to attend, and it is not necessary to pre-register.

I am fairly certain I will be heading up there. It sounds like there will be a good presentation and opportunity to respond with comments and input, either in public at the meeting, or privately via a website (being set up) for on-line reply to the agencies involved.

[A glitch in this thread seems to have prevented it from being listed in the index for a few days.]

The meeting in Port Huron is tomorrow; for anyone who has not decided about attending, this is the last chance!

Hoosier

I think if you apply for a MMSI number through Ship Station License from the FCC the Canadian coast guard will find your listing but not through the BoatUS type registration

Jim I would have gone to the East side of the State but I just saw the thread.
Please give us a synopsis of what was talked about in Port Huron.

My plans to attend came to a halt this morning at ten o'clock. On the way to pick up my boat from my storage place, a power steering hose on my truck developed a crack, spraying power steering fluid on the exhaust manifold--no fire but a lot of smoke. By the time I got that fixed, got back to the storage yard to get the boat, and made it home in rush-hour traffic, it was after 4 p.m., and there was no way I could drive 75-miles to Port Huron by 5 p.m.

As a result, I missed the meeting, too. Maybe there will be a PowerPoint version.
