just bought the 170 montauk, smokes at idle. a new shift shaft was just installed prior to purchase. Runs great, but idles a little low at around 700. After running it for about an hour noticed this smoke and then switched it into idle and kept wanting to die. Got home safe and couldnt recreate the smoke on muffs, idled perfect outside the water. Perhaps I need to open up idle screw? Any idea on the smoke?

Just a hint on making motion picture recordings with a Smartphone: turn the camera 90-degrees so the recording will be in the normal, universal, century-old format of being wider than it is tall.

got ya, sorry was kinda freaking out when i got the video lol any idea what the issue could be? is there definitely a serious issue going on?

also, it idles around 900 on land and about 700 once in the water, is that too low of an idle on the water? should I maybe open up the idle screw a bit?

What engine do you have there on your 170 MONTAUK? Mercury has made at least three very different engines under the model name 90-HP FOUSTROKE.

I think you might have the type of 90-HP FOURSTROKE that uses a power head made by another outboard engine manufacturer, which Mercury bought from them, and then built into their own engine with different paint and decals. Your mention several times of "an idle screw" and wanting to "open it up" makes me think you might have the type of 90-HP FOURSTROKE that has carburetors.

First of all, you should be aware that you are not supposed to be making adjustments to the carburetors because that engine was sold under EPA compliance with exhaust gas emissions. Owners are not supposed to tamper with any part of the engine that could alter its exhaust gas emissions. I just want to tell you that--you do not have to pay any attention to me.

You should pay attention to this: the Mercury 90-HP FOURSTROKE that has carburetors and is actually not a Mercury engine at all, but a repainted engine made by a competitor of Mercury, is somewhat famous for having problems with the carburetors, particularly the low speed or idle speed carburetor jets. It seems those jets become clogged or blocked or varnished or otherwise affected by routine operation and result in poor idle characteristics. There are many prior discussions of these problems.

I don't own one of these engines, but, as I recall, from reading the many reports about them, and from getting emails from people who owned them, the remedies range like this:

--take it back to Mercury and trade it in on a newer model. (It is probably too late for you to follow this advice, since it sounds like you are not the original buyer of this engine from Mercury);

--try doping your gasoline with a strong concentration of solvents or cleaners for gasoline fuel, and run the engine for a while on this home-brew gasoline, all the while hoping that it clears out the muck or debris or varnish or whatever it is that is causing the problem with the carburetors; or,

--disassemble the carburetors and carefully clean them, paying special attention to the low speed orifice or jets, and, with great skill, put those carburetors back together, reinstall on the engine, reset all the linkages, and get the engine running again; repeat this as often as needed; or pay a mechanic to do this.

At the very least you should probably get some Mercury QuicKleen treatment for the gasoline and mix it in a strong proportion following the advice on the label with your gasoline fuel.

It is common for the idle speed of an outboard engine to change when it is run without being immersed in water. The exhaust path on an outboard engine is through the propeller. If the propeller is not in water, there will be much less back pressure on the exhaust, and this tends to affect the idle speed characteristics. It is not a good idea to make any really touchy adjustments on an outboard engine when it is not in the water and its normal operating environment. Running "on land" as you say, with a hose adaptor, will change the behavior, particularly at idle speed.

Regarding observation of smoke in the exhaust: you have to distinguish between smoke due to oil in the combustion chamber, and smoke that is just caused by very hot, very humid exhaust coming out and hitting much colder and humid air, causing the water in the exhaust to condense out into a fog, which appears like smoke. I see this happen on my engine when cutting back to idle after a run at high throttle when the air temperature and humidity are just such to create the "smoke." It could be no more than that.

Also, please do not write about "issues" when you are talking about simple little problems or malfunctions. Issue implies exogenous imposition. The problem you are having with the outboard engine is not an issue but a little defect or malfunction or failure or annoyance or quirk or stumble or some unavoidable characteristic. Issue can also mean offspring, but I don't think your outboard will have any, even if you leave it in a dark room all winter with an attractive partner.

Sorry, yes this is the 2004 carbed mercaha.

The water temp was 75, air was maybe 79 but very humid. Would this cause such a fog? Also the fog or smoke cannot be re created on land.

All the advice is sound.
The passages in the carbs are very small due to Californican emission controls. Rumor has it that removing the Californican emission label alone improves the attitude of the engine.
The head is a Yamaha rebranded by mercury.

These engines need to be run in order to keep the carbs clean.
With real fuel, not garbage alcohol, they would be better.

So, as stated, clean out the tanks, pick up filter in tank, hoses, fuel filter(s), carbs, and balance the carbs. Quicklean is a good product.
Idle should be around 800. Or it will be difficult to shift. (Possibly the cause of the shift shaft problem)

The meteorological conditions when the exhaust gas will become visible as smoke due to condensed water vapor will probably require a lower air temperature than 79-degrees-F. It is similar to the temperature called Dew Point.

As for only seeing the smoke when operating the engine on the water, this could, again, be an artifact of the through the propeller exhaust path being underwater when in the water and open to the air when on the trailer. At idle speeds on an outboard engine when in the water, there is too much back pressure on the through the propeller path. There is usually an exhaust bypass path that is open to the air. The engine exhaust goes out the exhaust bypass path at idle speeds. Exhaust does not go out through the propeller until the boat begins to move forward as some speed. The exhaust bypass is usually somewhere on the aft edge of the midsection of the engine.

Also, if the engine was put up for storage and a lot of fogging oil was introduced into the combustion chambers, it is typical that this oil will be burning away with a lot of smoke for a while when the engine is first re-started. In a four-stroke-power-cycle engine you should not be getting any oil in the combustion chamber in normal operation, unless the piston rings are not very good and allow lubricating oil from the crankcase to get past. How much running time have you put on the engine since buying it? Any fogging oil ought to be burned off after 30-minutes.

Are we sure it is smoke and not steam?

Steam would indicate an overheating condition. You said the shift shaft was just replaced. That would involve the removal of the lower unit and I don't like coincidences.

An overheating condition would also, perhaps, explain why the "smoke" does not appear when the motor is merely idling.

Yes shift shaft was bent and they installed a new one before I purchased it. Not sure if it was fogged, but was on his lift for 2-3 years basically rotting. Before starting for the first time they replaced shift shaft, changed the oil and re lubed everything upon putting it back together, did not clean carbs but she started right up with new gas after maybe a second and ran well on land. Motor has been ran on water for maybe 1.5 hours to this point since I bought it.

As far as over heating, the engine block was warm to the touch after running the motor for about 40 minutes, and the water stream was not much warmer than the bay water temperature.
