I found this old whaler for sale local to me on my way to work today. I almost called in for some time off to buy it on the spot but decided to look into it a little more first. The gelcoat on the outside is not smooth like other whalers or boats I have seen and I don't know if it has been painted or that this era was just like this. Also the blue on the inside was rough and would need to be redone in spots or the whole thing. The motor looks to be from the early to mid 90's. I can most likely do a compression check on it but the location where it is I don't know if I will be able to start it. Asking $2450. Seems worth it even if I just clean it up some, enjoy, and sell or keep depending on my feelings. If I do purchase I would want it to be mainly for a quick flip or maybe to keep for a few years first.

I had a 1972 Tashmoo 5 or 6 years ago and think this is older than that.

I need another boat like I need a hole in the head as my grandfather would say, but this might be too good of a deal to pass up.

Any thoughts?

Andrew

Which is the most important about giving a price for a boat, How many hours on the engine salt or fresh? Trailer? How bad is the hull? Is the hull heavy (water logged) what is the transon like. I just found an old 16'7" like the one you have discribed, Mine is real rough real rough, but has a trailer I'm not going to pay more that $250, for the hull and trailer, so you see why we need the pictures....

That link should work to the album I created. Since the motor will pretty much be an known I was wodering what the hull and trailer are worth. I do not know the year of the boat but I was hoping someone here could help with that. It is at a donation yard and the people there are not usually helpful or willing to work too much on price, but if it is close I would give it a try.

With an RPS and OEM Console it at least has some redeeming value. At $2500 you are at about fair market value but I would call it a steal. The hull is 1972 or earlier assuming the gelcoat on the interior is original. The console is 1986 - 1990 and the console and the RPS Post 1990ish.

I would not pay $2,450 for it. It needs more than cleaning up if you want to turn around and sell it.

It looks to be circa 1970 boat with mid to late 1980s console and motor. The top of the gunwales should be blue, so I think the exterior was painted and the gunwales covered at the same time. Possibly when the console and motor were installed. Whoever did the work may have been drinking, as the Whaler decals are applied on the wrong sides, and one stern lifting eye is upside down. And it shows evidence of very poor maintenance (dock rash, motor corrosion) since.

The console and RPS are decent and the rails have some value.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like a little more of a headache then I want! The 72 tashmoo I bought was rough but orginal and cleaned up diecent, and it does not sound like this will be the same.

I tried another fourm for info on this and I am glad I came here instead!

Sorry it should have read:
At $2500 you are at about fair market value but I would not call it a steal.

As far as parts you are looking at $500 for the Console, $150 for the RPS, maybe $750 for the hull if there are no major foam, deck or transom problems, $250 for the trailer and maybe $500 in the motor if it runs. So you are looking at $2150 (maybe) for parts value, minus your time to part it all out, sell it and then hassle with the shipping or pick up. If the price was closer to $1500 - $1600 it might be worth it but all in all the boat is pretty trashed.

Its hard to say just from photos alone but it appears there would be a good chance you would be throwing money at it from those photos alone. Boats are useless without power and that motor probably has a long history behind it maybe some of it you may not want to hear.
