| Author | Topic: Wish Boston Whaler Still Made OUTRAGE 17's |

I think [a refreshed version of the OUTRAGE 17] would fill a void not covered by the Montauk and Dauntless lines. Something similar to the Sea Hunt 177 Triton. |

I, too, think Boston Whaler are "missing the boat". I have an OUTRAGE 17 and am surprised, as I will look in the market section only to see if there are any 17 Outrages for sale--not a one for many, many months. I am not in the market for another boat - just looking for that one item. Yes, if I were located on the coast, I would have at least a 19 or 21. Clearly, those with a 17 Outrage are not going to part with theirs - which I would think would also be noticed by BW management. In my case, I had a 13 Super Sport, but with our given afternoon storms, some of my friends were not quite comfortable. I noticed an ad in our local paper from a dealer regarding a new Montauk. Went to take a look at it, but right next to the Montauk was a new 17 Outrage. Without hesitation, I bought the Outrage - and like many others, will not part with it. ------ Jerry/Idaho |

It sounds interesting. What years were they built? I'm not familiar with that model. Can you post some pics of yours? rich |

Agreed. The 1996 to 1999 model years are very nice. Here is a link to my 1997 that I re-furbed recently. https://1997outrage17.shutterfly.com/pictures#n_5 |

It just seems that a hull that is well matched to a 115-HP would be attractive to a lot of buyers. |

I agree. wich they would come out with the old 17 outrage. You can not find them at all. People are holding on to them. Whaler is missing out. I am sure they have all the old molds to work from. Like to add it to my 22 1988 outrage. |

Agree agree! The 90's 17' Outrage is an incredible boat...why they discontinued it I don't know, or why they haven't reloaded I don't know. I know this won't sit well with some in the crowd but I can't stand the new center console Whalers...I have a '94 19' Outrage & it's a peach. Jim will probably throw me off the site but I almost bought a dual console Grady 20' a couple weeks back, don't think I would buy anything post '96 Whaler. Sorry |

I have 95 Outrage 17 and probably won't part with it - Buffing out right now, new procedure for me. Lots of nooks, crannies and angles. After talking to a real old Whaler dealer who also used to sell Grady White, reason they dropped the Grady line is reason why I would never purchase one. He said way too much wood in the hull. Including balsa as I understand it. I'm gaining respect for newer Whaler boats - doing some good stuff there, I have a friend or three who are new boat buyers, discriminating and experienced and are peeked about new whalers over Grady's Pursuit and others. |

I am not knowledgeable on older Whaler models. What is different from the 17 Outrage to today's 17 Montauk? |

That 17 hull looks strikingly similar to my previously owned 1999 Dauntless 16. It's a very nice looking boat. If it had been available when I bought the Dauntless I certainly would have had to consider it. Butch |

I have a 98 Outrage 17, my first boat. Have not yet launched, been servicing it, looking for better weather window to polish and wax and launch in a couple of weeks. Boat has the original 1998 Mercury 150 off shore series, seems like a lot of power for a 17' boat, I have yet to see. :-) |
| mkelly |
It is plenty of power for the boat, but not too much. I have a 19' Outrage of the same era with a 150 & it hits about 45 MPH. You'll love it & won't have any trouble loading the boat with people & gear. I've never ridden in a 17' Outrage but have heard it's great...if it porpoises think about modest trim tabs, possibly even fixed tabs which essentially help lengthen the boat. |

I don't like making reference to other boat makers but when I saw this boat I thought of the now defunct 17 Outrage. http://seahuntboats.com/new25/images/stories/boats/triton/177/DS2_5266.jpg |

Mike, when you come down to the LA area you can ride with me to experience the outrage 17. |

If I only had one Whaler wish it would be they built a freshened up 21' Ribside. No boat better answers the question "Why buy a Whaler?" There are a few nice examples around but this is one I can find easily, (sorry Larry). >>> http://smg.photobucket.com/user/lgoltz/library/Outrage%2021?sort=6& page=1 I can't really get excited about the Outrage 17. |

My !7 outrage11 is for sale with new power in the marketplace Great Boat |

Had this one saved in bookmarks, I think it is called Lionheart, or maybe I made that up>>>
That's floating beauty. |

That Outrage 17 looks a lot like the current Dauntless 170 except maybe for the stern shear line. |

I feel the same way about my 22' Outrage as you all do about the 17's. At the moment I also have the newer 24'acutrack hull Outrage. Its ok! But I will give it up before the older 22' Outrage.Itis a keeper. |

QTRmeg - Outrage 17 and Outrage 21 rib side are very different boats and both awesome. I have the distinct advantage of owning a 95 Outrage 17 and very close friend close by who has a Outrage 21 with brand new 150 ETEC so I get to ride/drive both. As regards porpoising - have not experienced that at all with my 17, short waterline makes for interesting trimming though but you can figure it out. It likes to be on top - of the waves that is. It is indeed a great boat. We spent two days with friends goofing around on Lake Michigan two weeks ago. Had five adults on board, way too much girly gear, coolers and bags up the ying yang, food and way too much junk. We went beaches near Muskegon, into Mona Lake to have picnic on board, then way out a few miles the first day - Day two off Grand Haven, tons of boats, lots of big wakes, three to four up front lounging on bow cushion having snacks, brews and wine. When needed I'd nudge the throttle forward to "pick up" the bow into this sweet planing configuration so wave wouldn't come over the bow - so fine like pushing a button. Then in open water 1-2s throttle up to about 3200 and it finds this sweet spot riding on the wave crests or something - and incredible with load on board for sure. For a 17 foot boat it accommodates a small group like a much bigger boat - passengers come to the helm, flip the RPS to watch the view over the stern, sit on the quarter seats, go forward and aft no problem and for all the years I've had that boat it is as dry a boat as I've ever been on. These are experienced people, one a lifetime sailor - got major thank-you's and cards from them! I was worried they were not having a good time with all the Searays and motor yachts around - they were totally stoked. And I think for all that running around, chasing the Lake Express ferry, off shore, back to shore up and down the coast line, in and out of lakes and rivers I think the fuel cost for two days was about $50 bucks. Go do that in your Tiara. |

Agreed with everything PeteB88 said (I have a 1991 Outrage 17 w/2005 E-Tec 90hp). Feel and ride like a much bigger boat. Extremely dry, still have some storage space (tall console, under the stern seats), economical to run (on a 6 days trip to a cabin up north, with a mix of fishing, family cruising and tubing every day, 2-3 hours each day, I haven't totally emptied the tank, so it consume roughly a 5 gallons a day) and a breeze to tow. I sometimes lurk at the nice Outrage 18 for sale but can't convince myself to upgrade and part with mine, considering that half the time I fish alone. Oh, and it won't fit in a standard garage! Have a look at that 17ft. center-console shoutout between 6 boats from 1992: http://books.google.ca/books?id=seMDAAAAMBAJ&lpg=PA24& dq=tide%20runners%20popular%20mechanic&hl=fr&pg=PA24#v=onepage&q&f=false (note the prices listed in the chart: the 5 others were within $1000 of each others at $17000-$18000 while the Outrage is $6000 higher at $24000) |

That PM article is awesome - thanks for sharing. I don't think the 18 Outrage is necessarily an upgrade, it's a different boat. |

quote: Well, the larger beam could sometimes be handy, particularly when passing by the console, and I'd like the look of the wood, but not so much for the maintenance part. A 150hp would also be a bit more thirsty than a 90hp... |

I Love my 1991 17 foot Outrage. I have a 2009 2 stroke Yamaha on it and it's a beast! I live in South Florida and it handles the chop great. I added a T top to mine because I hated that Bimini top. It will porpise a little if it's real choppy but all in all worth every penny for that T top. I won't part with it any time soon that's for sure!! |
