Topic: Best Use for Corroded Aluminim Fuel Tank With Holes

posted 07-23-2014 05:12 AM ET (US) Hi all. I took a 63-gallon aluminum tank out of my 1987 Guardian 18 and am replacing with new. The tank was BADLY corroded--worst I've ever seen. The sides and rear of tank covered in white corrosion half-inch thick. It was the equivalent of rust made of chalk. There are holes on the sides and rear, many big enough to stick a pencil through. I'm planning on scrapping it. It weighs 80-lbs and is probably worth about $50. I hate to scrap it but think that is the best thing. Top appears to be good aluminum.
Is there a better use for it?

Scrap it.
And have a long hard look for some sort of electrical problem to cause corrosion that bad.

Planter! Seriously, it would make a great raised bed for tomatoes or something like that.

Hmmm, electrical...oh wow, now THAT'S an issue hadn't considered, thanks Chuck. The sides with corrosion DO resemble the plates of a well used acid battery....
Will be certain my grounding straps are perfect once the new tank is in. A+++ feedback.
On the old tank, I believe I'll saw the top flat section out and use it for some other project in the future...that's about the only metal worth salvaging....the rest will be going to the scrap yard for cash.
Thanks all, good comments.
