Hello. I plan to trade up, finally! I have a 2006 Boston Whaler 130 sport with original 40-HP engine and trailer. What should I be expecting as trade-in value for it? I don't want to go into the dealer unprepared. Thanks!

Dealer is always going to lowball you, that is there business, do some searching on Boat Trader.com and look at some prices |

You can get pretty good information about pricing from ebay. The best data is from boats that actually sold. You can specify that by choosing the last box at the bottom on the left side. The next box up is for completed listings and can give you an idea of prices that were too high. Try different wordings in your search. "Whaler 13" gives a lot more listings than "Whaler 130". In general, if you don't want to miss listings, use fewer words in your search. The NADA guides may be appropriate for some kinds of merchandise. They seem to be consistently very low for Whalers in decent shape. I wouldn't be surprised to see numbers from NADA show up during a trade-in negotiation. |

Also take a look at the Houston Craigs List. I suspect you could do better selling your boat locally in Houston/Galveston than trading in. It may seem difficult but selling a nice 13 with low hours should not be very difficult. If you are dissatisfied with a dealer offer you can try selling yourself before settling for a low ball offer. Consignment is another possibility but requires some care. Butch |

I have seen them on Craiglist up here in the Great Lakes for $7500-$9000 and they sit and sit at those prices. Most who want a 13 Whaler want a Classic. |

You could also try checking around the marinas in your area.I have had my 17 Montauk in for service at several marinas recently and in storage a few days at another. In both cases, I got unsolicited offers for my boat even though it was not for sale. |

You can probably sell it for $5-$6K if bottom is not painted and it is in excellent garage kept condition. Dealer will probably offer 4-5 depending on what you are buying. The bigger, the bigger the trade offer. In Florida the amount of the trade is deducted from the price of the new boat, for sales tax calculation. |

A 2006 130 Sport with a few options, bow rail, stereo, cushion set - in very good condition should sell in the $8,500 range retail this is about a 45% less than a new one with the same options - $15,000 |
