Peter Maire is a New Zealander who formed NAVMAN NZ Ltd. Under Mr. Maire's leadership NAVMAN became New Zealand's largest technology company. NAVMAN produced a line of innovative marine instrumentation and other marine electronics, including VHF Marine Band radios, SONARs, GPS receivers, and chart plotters. In 2004 the Brunswick corporation, then under the leadership of George Buckley, Ph.D. Electrical Engineering, (who would also later be knighted and become Sir George Buckley), purchased NAVMAN from Mr. Maire for $108-million. In 2005 Mr. Maire left NAVMAN, and began to pursue other business and investment opportunities. The NAVMAN operation did not prosper under Brunswick leadership, and its marine electronics operation was eventually sold off in February 2007 by Brunswick to NAVICO, who was on a spree of buying marine electronic companies and consolidating them into a family of Navico brands. By this time, Mr. Buckley had left Brunswick, and the Brunswick corporation was being lead by a new CEO, Dustin McCoy, a lawyer. Mr. McCoy would eventually divest all of the companies of the Brunswick New Technologies group, and embark on a extensive program of purchasing boat builders. In July 2007, Mr. Maire was able to buy back from Brunswick portions of the original NAVMAN operation that were not sold to NAVICO, including fleet tracking and professional GPS solutions divisions. In August of 2009 Queen Elizabeth elevated Mr. Maire to a distinction as Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit. Presently Sir Peter is the principal of TAHIA INVESTMENTS. About five years ago Tahia purchased and took over management of FUSION ELECTRONICS, turning it into a profitable and market-leading manufacturer of marine and automobile audio-visual products. Just very recently, in July 2014, Tahia Investments sold Fusion to GARMIN. The sales price was reported to be approximately $20-million. I thought it quite an interesting coincidence that Sir Peter and Sir George, once partners in the marine business involving Brunswick, the present owners of the Boston Whaler brand, have both been knighted by Queen Elizabeth.

It's even more interesting that Brunswick could manage to ruin an ice cream cone, and funny that the former owner of Navman was able to sell its value *twice* and make money both times. Dave . |
