I am debating on which course to take regarding my 2000 Outrage 18 w/ 2008 200 HP ETec.
My daughter is getting a little older now, and is into wakeboarding, etc. She also would like to take friends out. The wake board scene doesn't seem to be too compatible with a fishing boat.
My boat has a hard TTop, and is essentially set up to fish. It's on a buoy in Puget Sound, and I will make a trip to Neah Bay with it once or twice a year. So probably 40% fishing / 40% water sports / 10% Neah Bay fishing /10% trips to lakes in Eastern WA water sports.
I was looking at the possibility of trading it for a 2008 or so Dauntless 20... or something else actually that would offer some more creature comforts, padded seating, etc. for a day on the boat. I would still fish it of course. I was also thinking about putting board across the front seat area and getting a big pad up there, new pad on leaning post, new seats pads for rear seat, and just keep on running the Outrage.
Last night went out across the sound, 3 ft and plus and running somewhat parallel with them doing 27 mph. 2 foot waves running 32 mph on the way back. I really like how the Outrage runs, and would a Dauntless just pound trying to do the same thing?
Sorry to ramble here, but just trying to figure it out. I am sure you guys have probably been down this path before and I could use some advice.

I'm also on Puget Sound / San Juans & have a 19' Outrage....my neighbor 1995 20' Dauntless of which I spend ample amount of time as well. The Dauntless is significantly heavier & that model can take up to a 225 HP. I would say with the proper propeller & engine mounting height the Dauntless does fine in some of the heavier inland wave action we see. It porpoises a bit but so does my Outrage. Very different layouts & they love the Dauntless for the features of the girls liking to go out & lounge, it's far more comfortable than the Outrage. My two cents...for what you described it's a no brainer, get the Dauntless or equivalent. It's warmer too being able to sit & get out of the wind, & you know our sound runs about 53 degrees.

I think the two dauntless models you both are talking about are different boats. The 1995 20' is a dual console bow rider and the 2008 is a center console.
I have seen many of those older bow rider models take water over the bow in calm waters while there were a few people seated in the bow area.

George Nagy is correct. I have the 2007 200 Dauntless. It is a very beamy (8'6 beam) center console boat with a large fold up seat aft that will seat 4 people and would make a nice big wake with 4 in the back.
However, there's no way to get out of the wind if seated forward.
It is a moderately deep V and much heavier that the 18 Outrage so I believe it would ride better in a 2 foot chop than the Classic 18 Outrage. I operate mine in San Francisco Bay and surrounds in 2 foot chop all the time. Used or new, they will all have 4 cylinder Verado's 175-200 HP. My Verado has been trouble free for 6 seasons.

I probably should have been more descriptive on my boat, because the "18" usually confuses everyone. It's the year 2000 Outrage 18, modern style... so basically, it looks like an Outrage 190. Newer hull, deep V. I actually think it might be basically the same as a 190, they just didn't get around to naming it that in 2000 (just my theory!) However, it is definitely not like the older 18 Outrages.

Are you in Agate Pass, next to the bridge. I see you boat all the time...from the water mostly.

I believe this boat is moored just outside of Hidden Cove, east of the Bloedel Reserve.
The Dauntless 20 is a slightly larger and heavier boat than the 2000 Outrage 18 and will probably ride as well, or better than, the Outrage 18.
What motor you get is another question, It would be hard to give up an E-Tec 200.

Tom, that's my boat. And I agree, I really like the E-Tec. In fact I have even thought about switching it onto whatever I bought, and putting that motor on the Outrage, but the cost might get to a point where it would be prohibitive. I am looking at getting a new prop, as the one I have is the wrong one (it came off the original Merc), but it still runs at 45 mph WOT.
What I am looking into as well is just fitting marine board over the bow area seats to make a large pad in the bow, getting a better leaning post or a new pad for the leaning post, and getting new pads for the rear seats. Might replace the fiberglass on the T Top with a larger canvas. Maybe do some type of deck treatment to freshen it up a bit. It wouldn't be as nice as the 2008 Dauntless 200 I looked at, but I probably could do a lot of the above for the cost of trading, sales tax, etc. etc.
That said, if I got the 200 Dauntless or similar, what would I miss on my current boat?

While I have no real time on a 20 Dauntless I can say this about the Layout...2 years ago I sold my 17 Whaler to get a 20' Grady White Dual Console. It was the best choice I could have made for a smaller family boat. The Dual Console works so much better for my family needs than any other Center Console Whaler I have owned. Not only does the family enjoy the great seating options, a large windshield for protection, but they now have space to bring friends along too.
I really like the openness of the layout myself and would highly recommend a dual console layout to anyone looking to use their boat for more family activities than fishing. I think the Dauntless / Ventura / Vantage Whaler Daul console models are all great options.

One more correction, the 2000 outrage 18 is not the same as the latter 190 outrage/Nantucket models.
