We had the pleasure of cruising with eight other boats earlier this month. Our small flotilla of outboard-powered boats had the following main propulsion engines:

EASTPORT, 20-footer 150-HP, two-stroke, Mercury, OptiMax, original c.2005
OUTRE, 22-footer, 300-HP, two-stroke, Evinrude, E-TEC, re-power 2014
OUTLIER, 23-footer, 250-HP, four-stroke, Yamaha, EFI, original c.2010
MANIC MOMENT, 23-footer, twin 150-HP, four-stroke, Yamaha, EFI, re-power c.2012
CONTINOUSWAVE, 24-footer, 225-HP, two-stroke, Evinrude, E-TEC, re-power c.2010
WHITEWATER, 25-footer, twin 150-HP, two-stroke, Evinrude, carburetors, original c.1992
HOLLY MARIE, 26-footer, twin 200-HP, two-stroke, Yamaha, carburetors, original c.1992

Last week the wife and I hitched up the 1990 Boston Whaler Revenge 22WT and headed to Lake George, NY...
After the mandatory Lake George Association pre launch inspection in search of invasive species, we put in at Fischers marina...
We spent 5 fantastic days cruising the lake and camping on St Sacrament Island...
Here is what we counted as far as outboard powered vessels on all hulls...
Yamaha 4 stroke.............. 32
OMC Evinrude and Johnson..... 18
BRP E-Tec.................... 14
Mercury...................... 09
Honda........................ 04
Suzuki....................... 02
Of the nine Merc's, five were on Whalers...
This does not include the twin Yamaha F100's on my Revenge...

Jim what I see here on the West side of the State both inland and on Lake Michigan is divided pretty much as follows;
40% Evinrude/Johnson (90% of which are E-tec)
40% Mercury (50% efi/4S and 50% older carb and 2S)
7% Honda 4S
8% Yamaha
5% others (Suzuki,Nissan, Chrysler, etc)

I would have to think outboard count is directly related to availability and historic loyalty
The lakes most likely had a strong evinrude presence and with the new etecs will keep it that way
As far as New England area new whalers all have the mercury outboards however it seems to me all the older repowered whalers have yamaha motors and most have been done in the last few years
A testament of sorts when you have a 30 plus year old outrage and you spend 20 K on a new outboard
Next time out I'll do a count

Just checked my garage - 100% Yamaha.

On the South Shore of Nova Scotia, we have a good Mercury dealer (20 years), a good Yamaha dealer (20 years), and had the Evinrude/Boston Whaler dealer of some 30 years sell (5 years ago) to new people who bankrupted it in 18 months. As a result, Evinrude dealers are an hour away and the Whaler dealer is 4 hours away.
I see Mercury's and Yamahas about equally, with a total of 70% of the market. Evinrude would be 25%, the other 5% is a few Hondas, Nissans, etc.
4 strokes would be 25-30% of what I see, still lots of old 2 strokes around.
Good dealer availability has a lot to do with what is sold.
The Boston Whaler dealer was 15 minutes away, the only one left is in PEI. PEI has 140,000 people, there are 500,000 people within an hour of where I live, not sure why the Whaler dealer hasn't been replaced.

No real need to count here on Cape Cod. It is clearly Yamaha country.
However, Mercury Verado's are continuing to grow on larger twin and triple applications.
Nauset Marine with 3 Whaler locations still very strong with Whalers/Mercury. Bosun's Marine Edgewater/Yamaha is huge. Supposedly the #1 Edgewater Dealer in the US. Cataumet Marine with Grady/Yamaha line is another huge player in this market. Again, many claiming the #1 Grady dealer I the US. (Who really knows is this is accurate) Contender/Yamaha is right up there with the others.
Notice the times I've said Yamaha!
Although I really like my E-TEC, dealers are small, along with Honda and Suzuki.

I don't see much value in a survey where the population is one boat. That is not a survey.
The survey I posted in the initial article consists of nine completely random boats. I know it seems to fly in the face of conventional wisdom that 77-percent of the boats have two-stroke engines, but that's the beauty of real data: it is data from real circumstances, not from the pages of a carefully written script.

I surveyed my yard and came up with,
1- 90hp E-TEC on a 24 ft Seark
1- 150 hp E-TEC on a 26ft custom pontoon boat
1- f250 Yamaha on a 21 ft Robalo
1 -60hp 2 stroke Yamaha on an 18ft Reno Skiff
1 -130 hp Honda on a 21 Revenge
1 -5hp Honda on a 15 ft Gheenoe
33.3% Evinrude
33.3% Yamaha
33.3% Honda
3 -2 stroke
3- 4 stroke
4 -fuel injected
2 - carbureted
My favorite 2 stroke is the 90hp E-TEC
Favorite 4 stroke is the Honda 130

The original survey of nine boats is not random. It is of people you know, who presumably all (or most) are members of a site devoted to classic boats. That 77% of their vessels have two strokes is not surprising to me at all.

The boats and engines in the survey are random. They were not chosen on any basis regarding their engines. Only a couple of the boats are really classic Boston Whalers, and most of them have been re-powered. The three boats still with original engines are c.1992 and c.2005 boats, and that's really not a classic period. kmev may not have been surprised at the data, but I certainly was. Most interesting to me is the data on re-powered boats. Four out of five chose two-cycle engines for re-power. That statistic really flies in the face of the conventional wisdom that today every boater wants a four-stroke engine.
