I'm looking at a 2008 40hp Honda 4 stroke. I know very little about Honda outboards. I would appreciate any insight you have, good or bad, with these outboards.

Honda makes very, very good lower hp outboards.
The only down side is some models are heavier than their competitors.

I owned a 2002 50hp honda. Loved it and I actually found it to be extremely quiet mounted on the Montauk. We referred to as the "sowing machine." It was that quite and smooth. Accidentally started it while on a few times not knowing it was on with other noise mixed in around the boat.
I find them to be extremely easy to self maintain. Everything is laid out thoughtfully with the user in mind and it works as one would expect. The bigger ones as mentioned are very good, but have had some issues with faulty sensors which is not the case with the smaller hp models as far as I know and have experienced.

Honda power equipment has been excellent for us (had a Honda lawn mower for over 25 years with no troubles).
Honda outboards is just the opposite.
Small Honda outboards - had trouble with the 2 HP and 8 HP models - I think the older 8 was involved with one or more recalls.
Knew a commercial fisherman/shellfish business that tried out the mid range (20-50HP) Honda outboards some years ago - lots of breakdowns and time loss. In the shop a lot.
I was warned by a Honda dealer about the V6 large outboards. Warm water use they were OK, but in colder water (like we have in the PNW), the oil sump was below the water line - cold water and hot oil = condensation. Water in the oil problems.
Hopefully all these problems have been fixed by now, but I have not been willing to take a chance.
I'll stick with Yamaha, Evinrude and Tohatsu.

I have over 500 hours between a Honda 150 and 200. Couldn't be happier with them, and that is running them in the cold waters of the Great Lakes. No issues whatsoever, quiet, and fantastic fuel economy. The Coast Guard racks up thousands of hours on them.

Thanks to the positive responses about Honda outboards I got from this thread, I just bought on EBay a 2009 Honda BF40 40 hp outboard for my recently completed 15 footer. I think I got a very good deal, its a freshwater motor off a pontoon boat, very little use, the owner needed a bigger motor, its got a S/S prop, it will need to be repitched for a 15 footer, with all gauges and binnicle controls. I'm going to pick it up in Gulport Miss. next week
