Hi All. For a first boat, I'm looking at a 1994 Montauk 17 with a c.1994 HONDA 45-HP. Hull looks to be okay, but it seems quite underpowered at 45-HP-- not that I'm looking to go fast, but I would like to be able to take the kids tubing. Think that would be possible on this boat?

With that concern, I'm also considering a 2001 Edgewater 135ST that's in excellent condition with a 2003 Yamaha 50-HP four stroke with 100-hours.

[What are] your thoughts and recommendations on this comparison: a smaller, well-powered, mint Edgewater versus an under-powered Montauk in just okay condition. This would be for New England river and lake cruising and tubing with the two adults and 2 kids, and maybe an occasional venture in and around Boston Harbor and the south shore.

Thanks,
Bill

Between those two boats, I would go for the Montauk. The Edgewater 135 ST is going to be too small for your needs and today's "tubing" doesn't require that much power.

Now if the choice was the Edgewater 155cc vs. the Montauk 17, I would go with the Edgewater 155cc. In fact I just did that this year. What sold me on the Edgewater was its ride in a chop, significantly better than the Montauk's due to its vee hull form while giving up a little space. It's like a mini Outrage.

The MONTAUK is preferable because it is a larger boat than the 13-foot Edgewater.

You should undertake a sea trial of the MONTAUK 17 with 45-HP Honda. Take your family so the weight aboard will be typical for your use. See how the boat handles. See if it can get on plane easily with that set-up. I don't recall hearing from anyone with reports on performance of a MONTAUK 17 with only 45-HP.

Boston Whaler suggests the minimum horsepower for the MONTAUK 17 is 35-HP. That generally means the boat can be pushed onto plane with a light load with that horsepower.

I don't see a current model 45-HP in the Honda line. I don't have the specifications for the c.1994 Honda 45-HP, but I suspect it is probably a rather large and heavy engine for its modest 45-HP. The early four-cycle outboard engines tend to be larger and heavier than a two-cycle engine of the same horsepower. They also tend to not have a strong power or torque curve. On that basis the 45-HP from the Honda engine may not give the MONTAUK the same sort of feel that it would have with a two-cycle 45-HP.

Finding a used MONTAUK with an engine that is more suitable should not be particularly hard. There are lots of MONTAUK boats out there. This one you've found with an old 45-HP four-cycle is very atypical.

I would buy neither of those boats. The Edgewater is too small and the Montauk is grossly underpowered. Look for a Montauk with at least a 70 hp engine. You will not be satisfied if you buy either of those boats.

I had an 86 Montauk with a Honda BF 50 on it. It would meet the requirements you listed.

Thanks all. I'm not surprised by the consensus view in favor of a 17' Montauk over a 13' Edgewater.

If I can get this Montauk for a low enough price, I may still buy it despite the 45hp motor. My tentative plan would be to use the boat as is for a year or two and then repower. But I say that without having undertaken any sea trial yet, so we'll see.

Thanks again.

Thanks again everyone. And Freddy, you're right -- Martin's Montauk looks awesome; Louisiana is just too far away from me in Massachusetts.

So to throw another option into the mix for a first boat, what about this 1978 Sport 15 with a 1997 50 hp Evinrude 2 stroke?

I owned a1985 15 Center Console Whaler, and put a 50 Mercury 4-stroke on it. It performed within 3-4 mph of the original Yamaha 70 hp I removed. Entirely satisfactory performance. Since you're in Massachusetts, I suspect the bottom paint isn't an issue, but I'd look closely for hull repairs underneath it. Pretty good deal, though...

I have a 1996 montauk with a 50hp Honda and it's great. Just me and my wife in the boat and it will go about 30mph. 6 or 7 in the boat and it will go mid 20's and still pull a wakeboard. None of us are large people though, the girls are all under 120# and the guys are all well under 200 so maybe if you've got a big crowd your results will differ. It's not really enough to give anyone a wild ride on a tube, but plenty for wakeboarding and getting around. I'll try to remember to post some video here.

Here's a clip I had in my cell phone from a couple weekends ago, my 8yr old is driving, cruising about 25-MPH. I would expect a 45-HP to be very similar. This is a 1999 50-HP.

Two totally different boats. The 17 Montauk will take you wherever you want to go. You will love the boa. You will explore, and water ski and fish and dive and . . .

You cannot stand up in 13-ft boat. You will beat the heck out of yourself when it gets just a little bit sloppy.

Get the Montuak, you won't regret it. Check out www.onlyinamerica.biz
