Center console is hinged for easy access when working within, and bolted through mahogany trim to aluminum brackets in rear of console when in use.

Terrific looking custom 15. In particular I admire the metal work. The RPS and swim ladder look excellent and fit perfectly. I also like the console design and the beautiful wood.

Great looking boat.Love the hinged CC and the SS under the RPS.
I like the handle on the gunnel in the back by the ladder too.
Nice overall setup.

At this point I will probably go with a new Tohatsu 50hp 2 stroke. I will have a windshield made but I want to cut the hole in the top of the console for the binnicle mount shifter before I install it. My aluminum guy will make a grab bar that goes around the windshield.
The hull was in decent shape when I bought it, the top side gelcoat was pretty crazed with many spider cracks from the Fl. sun. I sprayed the interior with AwlGrip but the exterior only needed sanding and polishing to look new, and there were no dings at all. Finishmasters Automotive and Industrial Paint made me an exact match in Awlgrip. They called it Whaler Desert Tan, and is on file and available from them. I gave them a sample from the side console, (the boat was a Striper model). I sanded and polished the sample.
I'll install the battery under the shelf in the console, the mahogany seat at the front of the console is hinged for storage underneath. The pedistal seat near the bow will only be used when fishing. I came up with the idea to hinge the console, becuase at my age I think I've crawled into enough small consoles.

It looks like you did a really nice clean job on this one! I especially like the boarding handle at the stern. Did something go wrong with the Honda deal? I thought the 50hp Honda was lined up for this boat. Perhaps it was another boat you had in mind.

M<artyn, Yes, I did have a '09 Honda 40 lined up. the price was right, it was supposed to be a lightly used freshwater motor off a pontoon boat out in Gulfport Mississippi. It was from Ebay. All controls were included. Well we drove out there last weekend, 500 miles, and just before we arrived at our hotel in Biloxi, the owner called me and told me the motor was a non-runner, they found water in the oil. So we headed over there the next morning, on Saturday, the business was basically a marine boneyard, they were very apologetic and they offered me the binnicle shifter the wiring harness for my trouble. Then we spent the rest of the weekend at the casinos in Biloxi, lost some more money but had a good time. On the way home I found a Honda outboard dealer who is basically a builder of commercial fishing boats in North Florida, and would sell me a new Honda 40, no controls, but now I have them, for $5100. The wiring harness from the '09 motor will fit, so he says. But for $900 more I can buy a new Tohatsu 2 stroke 50, controls and prop included. I am leaning towards the Tohatsu as I think 50hp is seen more on a 15' Whaler than 40hp. What is the consensus of the readers?

Boat looks awesome, terrific job.
Go bigger. It is only 50 hp when the throttle is max.
My opinion in the 80s; a 15 Striper with a 3 cylinder Johnson 70 was a perfect combination.

Rich thats quite disappointing about the all the travailing you did on the basis that it was sound. Good that you got the controls at least. Since you now have the controls perhaps that would be a good sign to continue with the Honda. Honda's website has the 40hp for 7499.00 retail and marked it down to 6999.00 The BF50 is a better deal at only 300-400 more although I couldn't find any data that indicates what the differences are. They seem to be the same weight. At 2K off the discounted price is not too shabby. To give you an idea purchased my 50hp new back in 2001 and it was 5K everything in. Rigging was 200.00 and it was included as well.

Many years ago I had 15' Striper. It came with a 50 HP Johnson. I repowered it with a 70 HP Yamaha (mid 80's vintage). I loved that combination. It was very sporty, but not dangerous in the hands of an experienced operator.
Your restoration/customization is really cool, in my opinion. Great job.

What auxiliary do you put on the bracket?
Tilting the console is great. Including that feature into the rebuild makes a lot of sense.
I consider removing mine EACH time I have to work inside.
All this "wisdom" we have accumulated is not making it easier to squirm around on my side to reach into that hole.

Rich, you did a great job bringing that old hull back to life. There are some nice touches there that are upgrades with a nod to the classic aesthetic.

I would go the bigger new 50 HP motor as you might not use it but it is nice to have when needed. Plus the 20% HP increase will probably give you a 10% better fuel economy at full cruising speeds as the engine has to work less.

I always like going for more power as the cruising rpms will be lower. i think this is even more important with 4 strokes. 2 strokes shrug off rpm but with more moving parts of a 4 stroke better to keep rpms down.
2 strokes are/were often run at 5000-5500 max rpms for extended time. I don't think many would run a 4 stroke at max rpm of 6000 for extended time.

Very cool boat. I'm with the others on the HP choice. My first whaler was a 15 sport with a 70 and it was a great combo.

I want to thank everyone for their kind words. The outboard at this time is up in the air, probably going bigger. This has been a fun project for me. I'm not sure what's next, I'm thinking of using the leftover Stiper console as a plug, build a mold from it and then layup some replica Striper consoles for sale. It would be an inexpensive mod. and an improvement over the mahogany small cramped console that were standard on many 15 footers. A fiberglass Striper console, a couple of pedistal seats a cooler and you're ready to go, and hardly any maintenance.
Converting to center console is a big deal, what with the tunnel and all, ask the folks who have done one.

Well, I just sealed the deal on a low hour, freshwater, Yamaha C60 2 stroke from North GA. We'll drive up there and pick it up in about a week. I never owned a Yamaha before, (mostly Mercs) but I think this outboard is more of the norm for power on a 15 footer.

Rich you're going to like the lighter 2 stroke and torque on that 60 HP instead of the heavier 4 stroke 60HP I have.
