posted 09-14-2014 07:26 AM ET (US) The console on my 17 ft classic whaler has finally reached the end of its useful life and needs to be replaced. I'm looking for options. Does anyone have any experience with the consoles from specialty marine? If so, are there any in the upper chesapeake bay area I could take a look at? Does anyone else build these consoles to the original specs? I'm definitely staying with the original mahogany look, too many fond memories to change it. I just don't have the time to pull apart the one on the boat and duplicate it piece by piece. Thanks, Mike

A friend had one delivered to my hometown. Either was not crated properly or poorly, and one or two of the glass panels were broken.
It looks like the varnish was either sprayed or only one coat. He hired a local pro varnish guy to add another three or four coats.
Also ordered new rail and stanchions. Good quality, although the stand off stanchions are _not_ a forging and chromed, but instead, stainless steel piping welded together.

Strange about the glass breaking, I believe it is plexi. I'm more concerned about how the wood for the console fits together. Do they use a lot of wood putty at the joints? Or does everything fit together nice and tight? Thanks for the reply.

You asked if anyone else builds these consoles to specs..the answer is yes.
Nautical Lumber Company will build one custom for you. The finish quality is second to none.
