Fall is a great time for fishing and for college football, but they did not seem to mix well this afternoon. I was watching the FSU versus NC State game on ESPN2--most of you might have seen this on ABC. Coming out of commercial, the program gave its sponsors what is known as a billboard. The sponsor logo appears on screen, the announcer reads some copy, and the network bills the sponsor for a little extra for this appearance in the broadcast. In this case, things did not go too well. The background video chosen for the billboard began with a low angle shot of a red bass boat being backed down the ramp by a GMC SUV. The HONDA logo soon covered it up, but it's bad form to show another car brand during a paid commercial for a car sponsor.
The conflict continued as the main focus of the shot became the MERCURY OptiMax engine. It would have been a lot better for HONDA if the boat had a HONDA outboard and was being backed down the ramp with a HONDA SUV.
The background footage changed to shots of two young men engaged in fishing for bass. The billboard was over, but the announcer had some copy to read over this fishing footage.
ANNOUNCER: North Carolina State is recognized as one of the top fishing colleges in the nation. Fifty-plus members of varying experience form "The BASSPACK." [The NC State football mascot is the WOLFPACK, if you didn't know.] They've won three national championships in just nine years of existence, the last in 2012."
COLOR COMMENTATOR: That's outstanding. That's athletic commitment, right there, learning how to fish. (A little chuckle is heard off-microphone, and probably in living rooms around the country.)
A somewhat awkward pause ensued, then:
ANNOUNCER: "'Nothing wrong with fishing..."
Finally they got back to the football game.
I bet they'd like to do that whole 30-seconds over again.
I do admit, fall boating is about the only time I might carry along a radio to listen to a football or baseball game. I should have been out boating today, as the weather was beautiful. And why wasn't I watching Michigan v. Minnesota on ABC--please don't ask.
